Great i've got cyano...

Hey guys,
So some time last year i picked up a frag from a lfs and it had algae on the base which i figure wasn't going to be a problem. Well it turned out to be a problem and after finally id'ing it i found out it's cyano... Which would explain why days of no light didn't do a thing to it. (lives on phosphate?) So i threw in some phosphate filter pads i had laying around but i know that isn't going to do much. So i'm guessing i need to get a phosban reactor? What do you guys think? Anyone that's had cyano before have any advice? I'm thinking the BRS reactor maybe the dual and i guess there is no point in getting the expensive GFO right now?

Thanks,
~Nick

improved water flow should discourage cyano from growing. I used to have tons of that stuff in a HOB fuge. I hated that fuge. Of course I sold it and the person who's using it now has it crystal clean. So duh- it was probably me overfeeding.

Anyways - check how much you feed, perhaps skim wet more and improve water flow is what I'd suggest.

I just added a new powerhead this week don't really see much improvement but we'll see. I feed about every other day and only a few pieces.
I will have to test my water. I just got a ro/di unit for Christmas so hopefully thats not it...
I checked all my parameters lastweeked and i had Ca 480, Mg 1200, Alk was extremely low 1.2meq/l (3.3DHK?) but now it's 2.5meq/l ish (around 7DHK) and pH is 8.0

Whenever I have cyano issues, I syphon out as much as I can and do a good water change. I also make sure I don't over feed but in general I feed my fish once a day. I increased water flow by adding two powerheads. I also test frequently. The main thing I think is the overfeeding. Cyano is a pain, but with patience and persistence at syphoning it out you will beat it. Good luck with it.

Thanks,
On top of waterchanges, syphoning and less feeding will some GFO in a reactor help or not?

It couldn't hurt! Start out with a slow flow just enough to make the top of the GFO tumble. Only use the amount recommend more isn't better. You should see a difference in a couple of weeks.

You also might want to raise your Alk a little to 8-10 dKH and your Mg to 1400 ppm. If you have a sandbed getting a Caribbean tiger tail cucumber will help also.

Thanks,
I plan on raising my alk but i want to get another test kit because i'm not sure my is accurate. So i don't wanna raise it to much right now. I'll have to see about the Mag i don't have anything for that.
I have a cucumber not sure what kind it is but he seems to avoid the algae and just eats the sand...
Hmm maybe it's not cyano... I just googled cyano and the results are different then i saw in the article i read the other day. The algae i have is green filmy carpet stuff thats covering the rocks and sand along with some corals...
My algae looks similar to this,

I seriously doubt that this caused your problem. I think your cyno problem was around the corner anyway. If you didn't have the necessary factors in your tank to start, the cyno would not have taken off, and would have died off on that piece.Put some hair algae in a nutrient poor tank with tons of light and it will still die.
