Has anyone tried this yet???

Modding out a Maxijet 1200 to go from 295gph to 1600gph.

Says all you do is add an impeller, make the shaft longer, and build or buy a new shrowd for the new impeller and that's it.

Maxijets are $18.00 and the mod should cost somewhere between 15.00 and 30.00.

I'm thinking about giving it a try but not before I get some opinions first.

Let's see how can I put this subtly . . . . SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!

We did a group from them and then did a bunch of mod's at last October's meeting. I would say it was a resounding flop. We personally mod'd 4 of them. Two never worked and the other two only worked for a month or so. I would suspect most people had similar results. I don't think anyone is still using them.

The best thing now is that Hydor came out with the Koralia's. For barely more than the price of a Maxi Jet and the mod parts, you get a nice clean pump that works just as good if not better. Plus, it mounts to your tank a lot better than a mod'd Maxi Jet does.

I'm sure some people have had success with them but with the cost and quality of the Korlia, it just doesn't make sense to mess with them anymore.

JMO, anyway . . .

Your opinion is more than sufficiant ... I'm looking for the Korallia 3's or 4's but they are nowhere to be found.

The only reason I though it would be ok is because I have 2 maxi1200's now and figured i have a little time to spare but I guess if i'm just going to eventually break them then forget that idea.

Thanks again John.

Check with TFJ Petcenter (sponsor). They had them last time I checked.

If you want to give it a shot just for the heck of it, let me know. I'm sure I can dig up all of the parts you'd need. The only risk is that you have to ruin your impeller to modify it. Impellers are relatively cheap tough, so you could always buy a replacement if it doesn't work out.

If you're bored and want to give it a shot, let me know. But like I said, to me it was way more aggrevation than it was worth.

I guess this means I have another box of useless parts in my garage huh?

I always thought that was the reason for having a garage in the first place, to fill with useless crap. ???

At least that is what I did with mine. ;D

Mike, if you replace the MJ1200's with a Korallia, I'll be needing 2 MJ1200's very soon.

I'd suggest the Hydor's too, much wider flow and you don't have to worry about anything getting sucked into it. if you have anemones or nudibranches.

I don't know if anyone else checked it out but the guy from MarcoRocks had a manufactured mod part for sale at the frag swap. Basically it was exactly what you are talking about. I listened to the speach and he was saying that for each MJ there is a tooled mod that is balanced. I would suggest talking to him. And yes the mod plus MJ is about the same as the Korallia. The housing is smaller then the Korallia though so if space is an issue or shape it might be better. It is more pipe shape vs teh Korallia that is egg shapped.

I just made two last night ;D one was on a 1200 (way to much for my tank) the other was a 600 (just right) ;D
best of all the cost was <$5 for two kits.

I picked up one of the mod kits from marco rocks
It went together easy and the mount was fine. So far so good if you wat pics let me know. It comes with the mount, impeller, and shroud.

That's cool that it comes with the proper mount. I was kind of bummed when I did my first mod and suddenly realized that the old one was no longer usable.

Hows that? when I did my mods I made it so I can dismount the whole thing and remount the old one.
even change the prop if needed.

What I meant is that with the mod in place, the orientation of the outflow changes and you can't use the existing mount. The normal maxi-jet piece rotates the outflow 90* and the standard mount is designed so that the the flow goes across the tank. With the mod in place, the outflow doesn't get rotated and then either blows straight down into the sand or straight up to the surface.

I know what your saying John ... what I did to remedy this was to glue a magnet to the back of the Maxi so the water gets pushed across the tank ... i'll take a photo of it and post it when i get a chance.

May I ask where you got the parts for the mod?

The props I got at a Hobby Shop. For the 600's I used a 1.25" and the 1200 I used a 1.75" The rest of it I
got at Home depot (plumbing) you will also need a small amount of 3/16 thin wall and some reg air line.\\

The mount was just as easy, all I did was heat up the clip mount with a Bic lighter.
