Re: AGA 120 (very few pictures and lots of dull writing)

some boring plumbing photos. Whoever said this was easy has never met me - the man with ZERO DIY skills.

Took me a while but I figured out the durso pipes:

Re: AGA 120 (very few pictures and lots of dull writing)

yep already drilled. I read to put in a small one first and if there is still a gurgling sounds to increase the size of the hole (or put an airline in). I'm totally new at this so we shall see when water is added....(fingers crossed).

Nice plumbing parts! ;D

Looks like you're almost to the point where you can put water in that bad boy!

Now I do have an RODI question - which I posted here:
AWI Typhoon 3 question

Basically - i don't get why "pure water" is coming out but my DI is not filling up with water.

I say "pure water" because this is the spout that is labeled as such on the RODI.

Re: AGA 120 (very few pictures and lots of dull writing)

Thanks everyone for helping me with the RODI. Pumped out 120 gallons since the last writing.

And as the professor says "Good news"

We have LR.... ;D

I finally understand why people are so amazed with Marco...the LR is truly very porous. It will be fun to read the other tank threads to get a sense of how best to aquascape.

Anyways I picked up some LR from a fellow reefer...THANKS!

Of course - there's always a catch. I forgot to ask if the LR had any asterina starfish. I realize this topic is debated a bit - but I have no intention of having any hitchers in the tank that MAY be beneficial. It has to be definite. Asterinas fall into the category of "iffy" and are therefore removed with prejudice. Pretty easy to spot since my tank is empty...I noticed they were clustered on 3 small pieces of LR rubble...so those came out of the display and into a small QT tank for further observation.

As for the party crashers - I pulled. Most were on the LR and when I pulled the LR out, I just kinda flicked them off into a bucket. They are TINY.

I dunno what kind of mollusc I found either - best described as a baby razor clam.

will try and get a better pic.

Re: AGA 120 (very few pictures and lots of dull writing)

So I think I have Rizzoids....they look awfully similar to pyramid snails. Regardless to be safe the tank is going clam-less for 3months.

other than that nothing new. I finally connected the sump to the display and tested both the returns and the overflow. I'm actually surprised there wasn't more noise from the durso -I thought for sure the DIY would be noisier...but it's been a pleasant surprise.

Anyways - as I stare at JRWolher's latest Group Buy List I have to save save save for things i"d like to get in january and february. Of course I heard on the radio that Wii Games were buy one get a second one $20 off...Rock Band.....hmmmm

Re: AGA 120 (very few pictures and lots of dull writing)

Hey - did anyone know that black sand has metallic particles that are attracted to the Tunze 6200 magnets???!!?!?

I dropped a magnet in the sandbed and what a mess. :p

oh i forgot to update - black friday - purchased 100 pounds of black sand. ;D

Where are the pictures?! Where are the "this thread is useless without pictures" graphics?! You people are all slacking!!

Re: AGA 120 (very few pictures and lots of dull writing)

What kind of sand did you get? Sounds like something from a craft store. :p
I second the call for pics.

Re: AGA 120 (very few pictures and lots of dull writing)

I just wanted some black sand as I saw rehype's set up (though he had that cool zero edge).

Anyways - it was black friday and Wil had a bunch of these in stock.

Re: AGA 120 (very few pictures and lots of dull writing)

I liked the black sand too. I wonder why the metal particles were there though?

Re: AGA 120 (very few pictures and lots of dull writing)

I have one bag left - I took my reefgadget mag float out and took a pic...you can see how the mag float is "stuck" on the bag.

I wonder if the bags of sand were somehow kept near a magnet for a long time and the minerals in the bag somehow became magnetized? You know the old junior high science thing...lol.

Re: AGA 120 (very few pictures and lots of dull writing)

Oh - some minor journal updates:

Water before RO: 345
Water after RO: 112
Water after DI: 0

I have a feeling though I'll be changing the membrane and DI frequently given how lousy the water in this town is. I was telling MAVL this - that if I knew how bad the water was in NJ - (i'm from NY) while house hunting in 06, I would have bought a TDS meter and checked each house. LOL.

The broker would have had these requirements from the wife:
# of BRs - check
# of Baths - check
updated kitchen - check

and then my requirements:
TDS below 200 - check
Floor on concrete Slab - check
location of future tank close to outlets - check
location of future tank away from windows - check

Of course the reality of house hunting for us (back then) was we still had a lot of home sellers with inflated ideas of their home value. Thus with limited supply - not all your wishes/requirements are achievable.

Oh in case I didn't list the equipment already:

AGA 120 RR tank/stand/bulkheads from AqOb
40 gallon reefgadgets sump - made for sinkingbeach...u r missed...
Typhoon 3 RODI
DIY Dursos (it's easier than you think), plumbing from HD/Lowes/Savko
Tunze 6100s x 3
Tunze ATO/Osmolator
Tunze nano wavebox
PM Kalk Reactor (still to be plumbed) with the ATO.
Sequence Reeflo Tarpon Return Pump (thanks austin)
120 #s of black sand
70 #s of LR (thanks nick!)
A variety of great books (which I listed in the first post) here

The one piece of equipment I don't have is a skimmer. I'm hoping to save some money for the PA GB. But we'll see. Maybe I could even hold out until MACNA (am i CRAZY?!)

I know it sounds like I don't have enough LR- but I'm not planning on loading the tank with fish...this will be focused on small fish and a low bioload.

All of this stuff has been gathered over the course of the past year and half or so...lots of planning and lots of scavenging for good buys (e.g. the tunze 6100s are discontinued).

Hold out till Oct. Thats crazy, I bet atleast 10 people get tanks and sell them by then. 11 months in this hobby is a life time. I'm sure you can find a good deal on a good skimmer by then. Post up a WTB

If you wait that long you will drive us all crazy. ;)

January on the other hand for you is like tmrw so that should be easy enough. Check out local clubs though like Edward said now everyone is getting in and out.

Holy smokes, Phil. Are you going to feel comfortable using that sand? I'd be too scared, to tell you the truth.
