He has a water problem!!

I saw that. It's crazy! There are a ton of pictures of the damage on his fb page Bill Wann

He has a 10,000 GPD RO/DI system

He also had a build thread up on RC. I was following it from the start but if I'm not mistaken he had it removed because people started asking personal question like how much he make and what he does to afford it. And I'm pretty sure people actually tracked down the location and were showing up.

You would have though with a system that large and having that much money invested there would have been some sort of fail safe or leak detection

I agree with RWC, a water detector on the floor, a float switch(s) strategically placed to sound an alarm and shut a valve or pump off, I'm surprised if this wasn't part of the system.

I read that when it came out and that was the first thing that came to mind. One of the few tanks that I believe should have had professional leak detection alarms connected to a panel that generates really loud alarms or phone call OR $1,000 controller.

Good thing is that he seems to have the money to rebuild.

One thing he may be wrong on is blaming the PVC solvent.

The first house I even owned required me to replace the entire main sewer line out to the house trap. One thing I learned is that large volumes of water hit the PVC elbows at extreme pressures, regardless of the solvent you use one must provide reinforcement at each elbow, in the case of the main drain line in the basement floor I poured concrete over each elbow at the suggestion of a licensed plumber.

Anyhow, I am sure he will re-stock the tank once he feels better about the mess and financial loss.

This is the pipe that cracked. It wasn't on the filtration side of the tank. It was on the surge side. He said something like even if he had a leak detection on this part of the tank it would not of made a difference .

I'm wondering if that pipe isn't DWV that he is using under pressure. It sure sounds that way.

EDIT TO ADD:

I also just looked up a picture of his filter room:

Picture036.jpg

National code for bracing PVC pipe is every four feet. By eye, it looks like that is what he has. However, whenever I've run PVC, I prefer 36 inches or even closer some times. That stuff sags fairly easily.

The pipe that broke had about 20' of head pressure on it.

Here are some pictures I pulled from his fb.

The tank is now back up and running.

Where the heck did all the water go. I'm assuming he must have something tied into he sewer system. Geez. My wife gets pissed if half a gallon ends up on the floor. That would be a deal breaker!

All I know is that Lake Michigan isn't freezing this year!

This is what he said

"Woke up at 4 am to and empty fish tank . the six inch pipe that I was working on replacing cracked and emptied my whole tank . looks like most of the fish will be fine but I lost most if not all of my coral . working on getting 100 or so buckets of salt to get it refilled . it has 18 inches of water in it right now that is running though the heat exchangers and sand filter so I can keep the fish alive for quite some time . what a great way to start the day . guess all of of the water changes I didn't do caught up to me all at once ."

he said that all the water went down the floor drain in the filter room

If you want to see the tank and construction here you go. put http in front of this link. ://s42.photobucket.com/user/wannbill/media/soft001.jpg.html
