Heaters

Okay I've been all over the place with this heater thing... I don't want my heater in the display tank no matter how advisable it is to keep it up top. So I want it to be down below. My sump has small chambers so I don't have a ton of room thee 10" max. Has anyone put an in-line heater or heater module in their plumbing system and thoughts? Where does one purchase something like that? All I can find is Hydor's In-Line Heater but it isn't meant to be hard plumbed and only uses 5/8" tubing. Thanks!!

It's fine to put heaters in the sump, I've been doing it forever. I'd suggest you get 2 or 3 smaller heaters instead of one larger heater. For eg, if you need 150 heater watts, use three 50 watt heaters. Since heaters are the least durable of our equipment, this creates a redudancy that insures against system crashes. You can buy three heaters from China off ebay for a very low cost. I just got a few new heaters that way - three 100 watt glass heaters for $25. You have to wait 10 days for delivery. Folks seem to shy away from inline heaters for saltwater. I'm not sure why. I don't have experience with them, decent ones cost a lot.

Thank you, any chance you could send a link for some in line ones for me to check out?

In line heaters are crazy expensive compared to regular heaters that is why people shy away. I agree with multiple smaller heaters. For your sized tank look at the cobalt neotherms. They are small and reviewed very well.

10" of sump is not a problem because it's advised to run heaters with the thermostat control unit out of the water anyway, that's what I do. They eventually leak and short out. I've been doing it that way for years and haven't had a heater go out on me yet. Though I pull them from service after about 5 or 6 years anyway, and can do so because they are so cheap.

I use in sump heater after having some serious crashes in my DT. I had an anemone stuck itself on to the heater and found it cooked up in the morning. Then I had some fishes crash into a glass heater and shattered the heater; luckily, the surge protector tripped otherwise the whole tank must have been fried. So now I am 100% for not putting a heater in display...especially a glass heater. They do sell metal heaters, as well.

Good call on the overflow!!!

I think initially a finnex titanium in the overflow is the answer, then at some point I will add an in take heater
