My eheim heater is coming up on 3 years. Just curious if people will typically replace them every so often. Not even sure what the typical life is of one.

Mags I don't know the answer to that. I have an old 300 watt one that's been running for 10 years. It's now a backup, it works fine still. If you do have to get a new one, get the all metal ones. My current two heaters are titanium with no thermostat, they rely on the Apex to run. It's nice not having glass in there...

I would get a back up, and use that one till it dies. Myself, I tend to hoard heaters just to be on the safe side

I’ve seen it recommended to replace every two years. I once had a a heater break and the problem is that when they break they get stuck on, not off, so they overheat everything. A controller is on my wish list this year for that reason. I’d say if you have a controller you probably don’t need to replace it, but if you don’t you may want to rotate every few years. A backups definitely a good idea.

That's my concern. I have an apex on my one tank but not my other. I'll probably just replace it at some point. Heaters are pretty reasonable theses days.

You could also hook your apex up to this tank as well...

I use one small heater that got stuck on as a general heat source and supplement with a larger 200W that I replace yearly and is hooked up to my Reefkeeper.
