HELP! Major change in coral behavior

I changed my gfo and carbon today and a few hours later all of my corals and Mushrooms started closing up. Zoas and Blastos are all shriveled. Al params are normal except Nitrates rose from 2 to 10. PH nitrites alk and phosphates are normal. Could the media change have anything to do with this. Looks like everything is suddenly dying. I did rinse the media and then soaked in RO water prior to adding to the reactor.

What brand of carbon is it?

Are you using the gfo or the little whit pellets for phosphate removal(not sure of the name). When I used phosban it did not go well for me. Nor did carbon for that matter.

little white pellets. Been using them since December.

When not rinsed completely they release aluminum something or another into the system. Causing problems. I lost quite a few pieces when I first tried it.

Do you mean you changed out bio-pellets like these??

If so, those are not supposed to be removed/replaced. You're just supposed to occasionally add more to replace what gets eaten up by the bacteria.

If you removed the existing pellets that had been cultivating the bacteria... you could have sent your tank into a mini cycle by removing that much at once.

Assuming this is what you did, I'd recommend a large water change and hopefully that will save your tank.

Good luck!

Not bio media, carbon and the white beads for phosphate removal. I am doing a water change today. I didnt have any RO on hand so need to wait until its made. Thank you all for your help.

I must comment that I have been using this carbon and phosphate remover for 6 months and never had a problem. I will most likely continue to use them once I determine the cause of the decline. Since my nitrates have risen I am starting to wonder if one of the inhabitants has died causing the issue. I have a rather large brittle star that I haven't seen in a while. Fish, snails, shrimp and other inverts seem unaffected. Today I notice slime coming off of my toadstool and frogspawn. Most everything else is shriveled and not looking well at all. And things were going SO well.

Have you tested nitrates this morning? IMO I don't think nitrates going from 2 to 10 would cause such a widespread problem so quickly.
Sorry you're going thru this....its very frustrating when the cause is not apparent. if you need water I have 75 gallons of rodi and about 70 gallons of salt water that I started making last so the sg is around 1.020 right now and all we need to do is add a more salt.

I agree about the nitrates. I will check them again this morning. Thanks for the offer, I have about 10 gal made now only need about 10 more. Tanks is only 54 gal. I have to run out to a meeting so I cant get to the water change until this afternoon. No choice at this point. This will teach me a lesson for not always having water on hand for sure.

Good luck. Hope everything turns out ok.
Thank you for the well wishes. Things are looking a little better. Most corals are showing improvement but not all. I did a water change and may do another tomorrow. I really wish I knew what the cause was. Had to be either the Carbon or the GFO but like I said. I have been using both for some time now although the carbon was a new batch.
