Thinking about adding another fish to my 40 bare bottom (no lid on tank) breeder SPS dominant tank. Current livestock, tomini tang, blue reef chromis, black and white ocellaris clown, wyoming white clown and 6 or 7 snails (which are breeding). just looking for some good suggestions. all fish get along very well so i want to maintain that.

As part of the Tang police patrol how big is your Tang? Depending on how big your Tang is, I wouldn't add anything other than something like a sand sifter, goby or cleaner shrimp.

tang is about 4" and have had him for about 2 years. very happy and healthy:) all my fish get along great in the tank. can't do a sand sifter because it's bare bottom.

I have a solaris fairy wrasse. It's an inexpensive fish, but loads of personality and doesn't bother anything. Well anything buy pods and little critters.

thanks dave. that is a beautiful fish! it's on the list.

+1 on the anthias, they are awesome, I just added 5 Bartlett and 5 lyretail. They are great to watch!

5 Barttlets and 5 Lyretails in a 40B sound a LOT. I hope your tank is bigger than that @DangerDave?

@jmags080307 you can add a trio of anthias if you want or a goby if you are into that. 40 Breeder is not something where you can keep a lot of stuff.

Time for upgrade? :D

No lid? I would not consider any anthias, wrasse, or sand sifting blenny (you are running bare bottom)

My question to you... How long has your tank been running and why do you want to add another fish? Especially if everyone gets along seamlessly

wrasses are a possibility. only experience was with a six-line. it was a bastard (he died)! i would probably need to put a lid on the tank which i don't currently have.

Why is no lid an issue? I know you will say they jump. Question is why they need to jump? A settled fish will not jump unless bullied. So your suspicion is justified but you did not elaborate why, which I did for you @raccioppi83 . Good call in the end.

Now that I see his list of fish, the devil in there is the blue reef chromis. YES. It is not a chromis it is a damsel. I had one in my 350G and he would chase all anthias and wrasses away all day. So @jmags080307 if you want to add a wrasse or an anthias you need to get rid of the so called "blue reef chromis" fish.

it's not a damsel. damsels are the devil! it's a blue reef chromis and a great fish:) i attached pics of the 2 different types.

@raccioppi83 tanks been running for close to 2 years at this point. struggling with keeping my nitrate where i want it. everything is pretty stable in this tank. phosphate is consistently at .03 but i have problems keeping the nitrates where i want. i've been trying to keep it in the range of 3 to 5 but it keeps dropping to under 1. been dosing stump remover a little here and there to maintain the levels but i don't want to do that long term. i figured adding an additional fish will help get the nutrients up.

Mags what are you doing to keep the nitrates and phosphates so low? I'm usually busy trying to keep them down, not up...
Not much to be honest. Run a skimmer and do bi- weekly water changes. Here's what I feed the tank- feed flake food 1x daily, rods food 3x a week, dose acropower 2x a week, feed dr tims sps 1x a week.

It must be the feeding. i don't have an issue keeping them reasonable, but never have to dose. I'm feeding PE Calanus once a day, reef frenzy twice a day, reef energy a&b every other day. I spot feed the coral twice a week with either calanus or a reefroid/coral candy type food.

Mags, a quick question on the reef chromis. I'm looking to add some to the fish I have, everything I've read is that they have the same temperament as blue/green chromis. Is this your experience?
