Help me setup my sump

Hi Guys would you all be able to help me setup my sump correctly? A lot of people have told me to get rid of the built in skimmer and to get rid of the bioballs. If thers nothing in the sump then wtf is the purpose of having a sump pumping water through my system for? I plan on putting a heater in there and a skimmer i guess but i dont know what else i should be removing or putting in there to make the damn thing effective. Anyone mind marking up the picture for me and letting me know what i should do? any help would be greatly appreciate in any way. Thanks for all of your time.

Powering it. I currently have a RIO 600 For the Skimmer/Aeration and
the Return Pump is a RIO 1700 if I'm not mistaken. Its not infront of me.

the thing i don't understand is.... the Water Level.. Where should the WATER level in the Return pump and Bio/ball/Eggcrate area be?

I'd get rid of everything in there. bio balls = Nitrate, That skimmer doesn't look good. I'm not sure if you can but maybe some cheato where the bio balls are.
You might be better off getting a fish tank the same size putting some baffles and sale this sump. IMO

would this depend on wether hes doing a reef or fowlr? I used a very similar sump(w/bioballs) for five years and the tank thrived. As long as he cleans out the bioballs periodically he should be ok . i would definitely get a bettor skimmer though.

If the bio balls are new I would take them out. I'm using similar setup 200 pro. I use the skimmer but added a smaller skimmer as well T1000. main thing is to clean that pad on top every week. not hard at all. o nitrates

Small corrections on the posted articles (links). Chaeto is eatable by Tangs, and probably by other herbivores. Sump is NOT a refugium! Strictly speaking, if something is called a refugium then its primary role is the raising of plankton life (refuge from the predatory fish), and filtration is only secondary.
