Help needed to identify algae

Hi guys,
I need you help in identifying what type of algae I have in my tank.
Here are some details
The tank is 120 gal with a 40 gal sump.
6x54w Tek lighting 8.5 hrs/day
Reef octopus Super XP 2000 Cone Skimmer
Temp at 78 checked in tank and Sump
No3 is about 5PPM
Salinity is at 1.025 checked with a refractometer
Very light fish load. (1 medium Black & white Butterfly, 1 small fire fish, 1 medium Cardinal, 1 small Fox Face, 2X Clownfish)
I feed pellets about 5 times a week
For circulation I have 2 X Koralia Evolution – 1400
And the return pump is about 500 gal/hr
The tank was set up in May last year; I cycled it with some shrimp and then added 1 fish every month.
All the rock was dry Rock bought from macro Rocks, with a small rock from AO to seed the tank.
The sand is Carib Sea from Big Als

I also bought 3 X Lyretail Anthias bit all three died ?
I do about 30 % WC every month.

I have tried brushing these algae off the rocks, but it keeping coming back.
Also I have NO coralline algae even after seeding LR and brushing the coralline algae of the LR ?

Here are some pics

Any help is greatly appreciated

Hard to tell from these pics. Is it brown with a bubble on top? Is it green, more hair like?

I will try to take better pics tonight
The algae is more like fuzz
And light brown is color
Us its very hard to remove no matter how hard I brush it

dinoflagellates aren't they caused by a ph unbalance

My ph is at 8.2 tested at night
When the light had been on for about 5 hrs

Are you using RO/DI water? Have you checked for PO4? What kind of test kits are you using? Do you have a fuge with any kind of macro algae? Are you using any GFO? These problems aren't really an "algae" problem, as much as they are a "nutrient" problem, so they must be getting something to feed on from somewhere.

hi guys
here is better pic i hope :)

i use RO/DI water only
i have fuge but no Macro algae yet.. been looking for some :( haven't found it locally...
i have GFO from BRS i will start using it this weekend

i don't have a PO test

any other thoughts??

It is still hard to see, but since you said it was brown it is not hair algae. I would guess it to be dino.
If it is dino you can dose hydrogen peroxide - 1ml per 10g and that should take care of it. 3 doses should make a difference..

Good luck.

Do you have a TDS meter to check the quality of your RO/DI water? I would get your GFO reactor up an running. Get a PO4 test kit, preferably a Hanna colorimeter. If it's Dino's I'd also get a GAC reactor on line too. I don't know where your from, but I'd bet there is some local reefer who would be willing to spot you some Chaeto for your fuge. There is no silver bullet, or miracle cure for this, it's going to take some time, so like everything else in this hobby, patience is key.

The key thing in identifying Dinos is when the lights are on you will see air bubbles at the tips of the snot... just a shot in the dark here and what i see in the pic it looks more like turf algae

hi guys,
the TDS for Ro/Di water is 0.01 so that should be good
plus i never see an air bubbles on this algae

it is more like a fuzz, when i pull it out it come out in clumps.

the skimmer also produces about 1/2 cup of light green goo

any other ideas??

When you touch it is it soft or like astro turf? also when you pulling off does it peel off the rock or the roots are dug in?... The green skimmate i have no idea.. Do you feed with green flakes or anything green?

The_Codfather - its soft to touch,
and when i pull on it some it comes off the rock, but some times the fuzz comes away by roots are still on the rock..

thax for ur help bud :)

Will it's not Dino's and that's a really good thing and you sure it's brown and not a rust color?
