With the storm approaching and it seeming like we will be impacted I'm curious to see what everyone is doing to be prepared. I have already tested the generator and filled a few gas cans.

Also best of luck to everyone and stay safe!

just watching the storm path and making sure everything is charged. Hoping I don't lose power or at least not long.

Stay safe. I'm concern when it hits our warmer than normal water that its going to get much stronger.

No I had a new carburetor but on it in the spring. It started a few months ago. I guess I'll try to drain.

Smell the gas. If it smells like turpentine I would drain the it. Also make sure to drain the cup on the carb. You will see a brass screw to drain it. Try to get all the gas you can out of the
Lines as well. Add a little new gas and try to start it.

Picked up a generator a few weeks ago, tested it once and it ran fine. I'm hesitant to buy many gallons of gas just because it's such a pain to dispose of if I hold onto it for a long time. Paramus has a day for hazardous waste , but it's once a year, and I haven't found any regular place in Bergen County to dispose of bad gas.

I lost power memorial day for about 4 hours, scared me enough to get one. Luckily the battery backup kept at least the pumps going.

I have been meaning to wire the generator up to the house with an interlock kit, but haven't gotten around to it as it's about 500$ for the wire (about 80 feet of 6-3) and all the associated parts. Last time a tree branch fell on the power line and sent 220 down every line in the house, caused 5K of damage. Also meant to install a surge protector on the panel which protects from line to ground, line to neutral, and each phase to each phase. Made the mistake of using a panel surge protector that didn't cover all those and blew a bunch of stuff up.

Just some random thoughts on my plans in case it helps others, most of my preparation includes prayer at this point.

Everyone should use a gas stabilizer in their gas. Then no need to drain it every year. Use same gas in lawnmower.
Can you use that gas for cars to keep it fresh in storage? I. E. Rotating it? I picked up 5 gallons but if it's not used it'll be next summer before I use it all. Just not sure if fuel stabilizer is ok for cars.

I'm not aware of any issues running gas with stabil in a car engine.

I buy gas about every month or so....to have it ready. After that month or so, I dump that five gallons into my truck, and then refill that gas can. That way I always have fresh gas. That's the one thing that caught me on Sandy, not having the gas....and with no gas stations open until about day 3 or 4. So what I did was siphon gas from my cars to hold me over.

I do pretty much the same.

Yes. It was for boats and cars. I had a boat a while ago that I haven't used for over 5 years and it started right up. I also use the gas in my snow blower.

I'm planning on converting the generator over to Natural gas with a kit so I can run indefinitely assuming gas is flowing. The over head power lines are prone to damage around me.

We bought this house a week after Sandy's aftermath, they were out of power for a week, so I'm trying to at least get the electrical lines hooked up for winter. Before I had the reef tank the wife wasn't even open to a generator, but after the 4 hour outage and frying of 5K worth of appliances, she's on board. Of course having a 7 month old doesn't hurt the argument either :)
