Home theater help needed

Looking to some help on setting up my HTPC to be 100% functional. I build all my own computers and am pretty good with electronics, but these issues have me stumped.

First let me describe the setup:

Basically I have my main computer in my bedroom which has a hdmi 28" lcd as my main display, 2.1 speakers through analog for audio, wired keyboard + mouse. I do all my browsing/gaming/music listening my bedroom.

Now on the other side of the wall is my man cave so to say. It houses my audio receiver, 5.1 speakers, 50" plasma, and 180 gallon saltwater fish tank in wall (bragging I know

)

So from my computer in my room I ran a hdmi cable to the man cave in to the receiver input with the hopes of using the computer to play my media directly to the tv. My graphics card is a gtx 670.

Now I am able to watch movies from the computer to the tv, but it require some tweaking/round about way of doing it as outlined below and is why I'm here for some help.

The problems:

1. Audio:

Right now if I want to watch a movie from my computer to my tv I have to switch the audio output. I do this by going to Start > Control Panel > Sound > I then have to right click on my tv and set it as default device. (This will then play the sound only through the receiver). Now when I am done watching a movie in order to use my computer for gaming or music I have to go back to Sound option and right click and set "Speakers" as the default device.

I was thinking of setting up a macro to run through the clicks for me. Unless there is a way to have windows detect when the receiver is on to switch to that as default device for audio. The receiver is only on if I am watching a movie in that room.

2. Video:

Now on to the video issue if I try to set my multiple monitors as duplicate the whole desktop/start menu does not properly fit on my TV screen at 1920 x 1080. I tried switching through the resolutions with no luck.

What I do now is I have windows setup to extend these displays. To watch a movie now what I need to do is open VLC player and win + shift + right arrow to put the video player onto my tv. Then I have to right click in the video player and set it to full screen.

This is a major Pita. I'd prefer just to duplicate the desktop to the tv so I can see everything I'm doing and just have full control of the system from there.

Now right now I only have a wired keyboard in my bedroom, but what I ordered tonight is a Logitech Mini PC Dinovo Keyboard and 10 ft usb extension cable. I figure with the extension cable I can run that to the room and put the Bluetooth dongle there. This should eliminate any distance/through the wall issues.

3. Media Management:

Right now I have a media library of around 300+ movies backed up onto my pc and around 30 different television shows ranging in season size. I attempted to use "MyMovies" as an easy way to catalog/select the movie, but it is a bit slow/non responsive at times. Any recommendations for software to make picking a movie/show to watch easier from my catalog is appreciated.

Well I hope the fine community can help me with this and any additional details/questions that need to be answered I will do my best.

Thanks for reading and thanks for the help in advance!

I was in your dilema about a year ago and ill offer my simple solution.
Get apple tv & keep your itunes organzied. it's 99$ & ridiculously easy to use. all it would require is a network cable & itunes. Im not usually an apple guy, but for this, this was the best solution imo. the new one does 1080p just like your PC would and is flawless.

I appreciate it, but that is not an option. Thank you

Hey Brandon,

Is the goal of all this to be able to just listen to your music and watch your backed up movies on your TV with the sound going through the receiver? If it is then I would check out a WDTV or a small dedicated PC running XBMC (or hell if you can find an old xbox not a 360 you can mod that). I have a WDTV in the family room and the bedroom and it's great. Pulls everything off of my media server and will output in full 1080p (if thats what the media file was encoded in).

If the goal is to be able to browse the web and play games it gets little trickier.

Goal is to be able to do all the above. I mean I could just build a standalone htpc and then network the two computers together leaving all my media on my main pc, but I wanted to avoid building a separate system that will be used only for a few hours on the weekend.

Got it. Well let me go in order then

1. Easiest way to do this is get a Harmony remote (Probably works with others but I've only done this with a Harmony or Pronto). You'll also need to get an MCE IR receiver for the PC. You'll then need something like EventGhost installed on your pc. You will now need to write a script in VB or Python (which ever you like) that will switch your default audio output device between your computer speakers and your home theater. Install the MCE IR on your pc and make sure it shows up in EventGhost. You will then go into the Harmony menu and add the device "Media Center Computer -> Microsoft (Manufacturer) and type in "Microsoft MCE Keyboard". Once that device is added to the remote you will then need to go to create a new activity on your remote and when you get to the point of customizing buttons you will need to open EventGhost on your PC and have it transmit the IR signal that is linked to the script you originally wrote. So basically now anytime you go to that new activity on your remote it will now switch the audio for you and when you change activitys it will switch it back.

2. Does it show up on the plasma better when your just doing extend my desktop? Problem is Windows has a tendency to pull info from your main monitor and then recreate it on the duplicated monitor. Problem is sometimes it trys to mimic the output resolution and they don't always match up (gotta love that two way communication :) ). That's why it didn't get any better when you manually went through all the output resolutions. One option to correct this is installing a dedicated video card that will only output to the plasma and then try duplicating your display. Unfortunitly this only works about half the time. Personally I would just write a script to extend your desktop and open VLC in fullscreen on monitor 2. Then map it to EventGhost and add it to that original activity you created in step to.

3. MyMovies is probably the best one out there. Only downside is the first time it runs a scan it takes forever and you need to make sure you have the video properties filled out perfectly on each movie file otherwise I've seen it do incorrect info mappings.

Easiest way you say!

When I show it as extended desktop the extended desktop and videos show perfectly. Only when duplicating is there an issue in resolution.

I will toy with this probably more on Tuesday, googled my butt off so far. If I can't figure out a solution I may just take my old Q6600 and build a htpc and be done with it. Only thing that stinks with that is that I don't have a HDMI video card only DVI and the audio out I'd have to figure.

Well I found a program that makes it 2 clicks to switch audio sources so that is a good thing.

Now to find a solution to my duplicate display issue.

Brandon, if I could, I would offer some helpful tips as well. Unfortunately, the only thing I was ever good at fixing on a TV were the knobs. So if your TV has a problem with the knobs, I’m your man! (You can also see in the picture I know a couple antenna tricks as well.) Call me if you need me.

Hey Brandon,

How what type of connection are you using for the Audio? 3.5mm? HDMI?
Sound card or on-board audio?

edit*
I should read before I post. LOL

I believe if you go into NVidia's control for the card you can set it up to run both HDMI audio and analog at the same time.

Yeah so I ended up not needing to buy anything or setup an additional box.

I fixed the audio issue with a simple switcher and figured out the video issue too.

So I figured out the audio, kind of figured out the video.

For whatever reason unless the resolution is set to 1176 x 664 my HDTV will not show the full desktop, it kind of stretches over so to say at 1280 x 720. At 1176 x 664 though everything displays fine.
