Hoping for the best.......(Disaster)

This morning I woke up and the tank was at 85 degrees. I paniced and put in a couple of frozen gel packs and continued on with my morning routine. Before leaving to work I checked on the gel packs to see if I needed to replace them. When I took them out, one of them had busted open. I took a look at the tank and the water had a white haze. I noticed the fishes trying to eat all the little tiny gels. I paniced even more, but there was nothing I could do. I had no make up water, nor another tank to put all my corals and fish in this early in the morning. I read the gel package and it does say that it is nontoxic. I know this applies to human beings, but what about fishes and corals? I just hope that I didn't kill anything.

Filter socks on the drain lines would help get the solids out of the tank. Then just do a nice sized water change as soon as you can. Good luck. At least it says non-toxic. I guess that doesn't mean it isn't bad for your tank, but it at least gives the glimmer of hope. Keep us posted.

Ziplock bags of ice would be another alternative for if that happens again.

UPDATE: Just got a call from my mother and things seem to be looking good for now. Got the temp down to 81.3. I actually turned off the lights this morning to get the temp down.

Good luck, Richie. Keep us posted. I'm sure you're being oh so productive at work today with this looming in the back of your mind!

You may want to look into something like a AC Jr. that will turn your lights off at a certain temp.

I have one and it shuts off the lights at 83 degrees. To be honest, this all happend at 5am and I wasn't thinking right. My Korilia went bad on me and I put a Rio pump in the tank as the backup. I think that's the culprit for bringing the temp up. My skimmer wasn't even on. I replaced it with three Maxi Jet 1200 and now the temp is stable.

I'm happy to say that everything is doing well. I just have to siphon all the little gel at the bottom of the tank. I'm sure some of it is deep in some of the rocks. It's going to be a big job to get it all out.

85 is not a temperature to be totally seriously worried about.

My tank is constantly 85. The acros and other SPS love it. In areas like the Red Sea, the temperature can go up to 87.

I've never had an issue with temperatures in the 83-85 range where a lot of people freak out about.

I hear allot of story about corals dieing when it hits 87. I usually try to keep my tank around 81.1. My corals love it and thriving. I have my lights to shut off at 83. I am now thinking to have the AC JR to shut off the skimmer at 83 as well. I thought I had fix the problem but when I woke up this morning, the temp was at 86. I think jumping from 81 to 86 degrees has to cause the corals some stress.

If your tank is a consistent temperature in the mid 80s, it shouldn't be a problem hitting 87. But like you said, if you're tank is jumping from 81-87 over a short period of time, I'm pretty sure you'd see some problems.

My tank is consistently around the mid 80s and I've seen nothing but tremendous growth and polyp extension from my corals. It's all about consistency, though.
