How can they let this happen?

I can understand the need for the dredging work... but the disposal site location makes no sense to me at all. It's literally right next to a Protected Habitat and a Conservation Park! Why would they allow that?

They should be required to take the dredged materials elsewhere because if they put it where it's proposed then it will certainly destroy any nearby reefs.

I would imagine that Australia has the same issues with their dredge material as we have here.....it's heavily contaminated with nasty stuff. As an example, the Army Corp of Engineers has been trying to dredge the Raritan River for years. They once again have posted for companies to supply bids....just two days ago. They want up-land disposal of the dredge, and the reason why this hasn't happened in the past is because no county or state wants this contaminated soil. I know our town has said NO....and we have the dredge fields that have been used in the past. This current bid is for only 180,000 cubic yards with an anticipated cost of up to $25 million dollars....you figure out the cost per yard.....ridiculous. And they still probably won't find any successful bidders.

My guess is that this ocean dumping gets around a bunch of the environmental issues of disposing of it up-land.
