How do you deal with ICH.....

Well woke up this morning and fish looks horrible. It has to be velvet, fish was breathing hard and was lying on a piece of rock. I had to get to work so I was not able to get it out. I expect the fish to not make it until I get home today.

The only plus side, I even hate saying that is, that it is the only fish left in the tank. So from today on, it will be fallow for prob 10 weeks..

If I get home and cannot find the fish cause it died in the rocks, can the parasite live off a dead fish for a bit. I don't think that it could, but I have to ask.

I know that I will have to keep an eye on the levels closely, i will probably do some small water changes every day to make sure that the levels don't get out of wack.

i am sorry to hear this anthony...

the only plus side is now the tank situation the worst has passed and you can only look forward to the bright side future right? That means shopping for new inhabitants.

Sorry to hear about your battles. I have luckly never seen MV, but I was hit by ICH really bad and know the pain it causes.

Personally, I went fish free for 12 weeks (to be safe) and moved the fish to a QT tank that I dozed with Malaria meds that I picked up from Dr. Jim as well as doing a lot of QT water changes. My water quality is pretty bad and my fish has never showed signs of ICH again... so I guess that stuff worked.

Dr. Jim if one of our Sponsors and a really nice guy! By the way, he sells fish that you can buy that are pre-treated with the Malaria meds, and other things, to minimize the possibility of infection. It also keeps you from having to QT them yourself.

well i think i found out who gave the ICH. The vendor is not here it is a MR vendor. I found another member on MR who bought from that same vendor and also got hit with something.

I'm sure that we didn't get them from the same place but it seems as though it's really going around. I think that some importer or wholesaler that a few people use got it and spread it around.

Yeah, it just seems like LFS' that use the same wholesaler or importer are spreading it around. One of the drawbacks of the hobby I guess.

Does velvet eat away at fins? I managed to get my clowns out of the tank and when I put them in the QT i noticed that my females tail looks like it's disappearing. Maybe she has a secondary infection? I'd really like to get the rest of the fish out of the DT and into the QT so I can leave it fallow. It's darn near impossible though, the firefish dart under the rocks and the Blennies (Barnacles and Tailspot) just disappear into the rock. I really don't want to have to remove my rock.....

So what place is this so we all can be aware?

before I put it out there I want to be SURE that it was them. It is a store in Bergen County. Small shop.

Velvet can make the skin fall off. My anthias I still alive. I am shocked. But now the stomach is distended.

Prob is that if you have velvet, there is a very small chance that the fish will survive. And the parasite will continue to reproduce with just a single host.

I do not buy a lot of fish, but when I do I ask the lfs to hold my fish for two weeks(with a deposit, of course) in a copper free tank. Not a guarantee, but a big help.
