If you're studying marine biology MASNA (www.masna.org) has a scholarship that you can apply for. That might help at least buy books!!
I tried college, twice, didn't really like it. So I dropped out, twice. Wish I stuck with it though. Now I have to go back and do what I should have done 10 years ago. I found out, that when your in my field, if you don't have a degree, you'll be stuck doing shift work forever. I give anybody credit that can go to school full time and still have time for a reef tank. Good luck!
Im doing marine biology (biological oceanography) at Rutgers. I currently work at the IMCS (Institute of Marine and coastal sciences) and I work doing maintenance on the reef aquariums they have there for research. So technically, its like getting paid to keep reef aquariums.. so I guess I lucked out.

Phyl, I tried applying for it last year during the MASNA and was rejected. Im looking to apply this time around after this semester and late summer.. like during July.
I guess technically I'm still a college student, I graduated in May 09 with my B.S. in Business Management, unfortunately the job market is still crap and trying to find an entry level business job is more difficult than anything.
So now I'm attending school again to earn my M.B.A in either marketing or business administration.
If anyone knows of any hirings in the area, please do tell.

Phyl, I submitted the application but wasn't awarded the scholarship. I want to try and submit it later because Im hoping to improve my gpa this semester and hopefully I will win the award this year.
And the topic of low cost saltwater keeping has been mastered by me already, well not mastered but I have some pretty ghetto tanks.
basically there is no sump but my 40G has the tunze skimmer and heater with a Koralia 3. There is an auto top off fed by the Aqualifter pump thats on 30 mins a day, this seems to get just enough water. Overall, the cost was only about 400 for a 40G, which seems fair considering my last set up was $35 per gallon almost.

College was loooong time ago for me. :-X I started as a Marine Science major but ended up with a Geology degree. My roomate and I, another MS major, moved over 250 gallons of tanks every time we changed houses every spring and fall. I don;t know why none of our landlords wanted us back? ???
They were all fresh water as SW was then exclusinvely a richman's hobby (Not like now when we poor folk can enjoy it :
) but it was still a PITA to move and hefty expense for college students. We had an awesome community tank a couple of chiclid tanks and I had some ginormous piranhas!

I miss College, the parts I remember were fun! I agree with Phyl, maybe we should start a "Low Budget Reefer" area in the forums! That could be fun!

Although it is worth putting more money into something to avoid human error as much as possible... especially if you're keeping SPS corals
