HUGE CRISIS W/ SALT LEVELS

Re: HUGE CRISIS W/ ABSOLUTELY FISH!

That is a very common mistake among reefers that are starting out. I'm in Aquatic Obsessions all the time and I've heard many people come in and say the same thing and Will corrects them and all is well. Some people catch it before it's too late ... some don't.

If you're ever at a meeting and I'm reminded to bring it I have a frag for you too.

I ask about distilled water a coupleof months ago and was told that you would have to know that it wasn't distilled in copper kettles. If you have a Walmart near you they have RO water for $.69 a gallon. It's labeled drinkwater (green label). That's what I was using before I bought a RO/DI unit.

Re: HUGE CRISIS W/ ABSOLUTELY FISH!

If you're close to Aquatic Obsessions he sells it for 50c a gallon but there are so many people getting water from him that he my run low at times.

I'm curious if this is the first time you've added top off water, how old is your tank that it can support so much livestock?

I think, if I read his earlier post correctly, instead of topping off, he was buying RO Salt water, or mixing it himself, and doing water changes (adding enough throug the change to accomodate any necessary top off)

Sorry to hear about your losses...

Hopefully you can get some form of RO system. They've come down alot in price from years past, and they will pay for themselves in no time at all. I learned a different, but similar lesson, in another reef tank years ago about what happens when you use TAP water and not RO. Now, ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING that has touched tap water, takes an RO bath before ever going within 5' from my tank. Remember...when water evaporates, it leaves behind dissolved solids. So if there is tap water on something you rinsed off, and it air dries, the minerals (dissolved solids) don't evaporate (just like your issue your evaporation and high salinity) and when you stick it back in the tank, they get into your tank.

Maybe this is extreme and maybe I'm the only one who does this...but I had a NASTY run in with constant problems with a 12 Gallon Eclipse from using Tap water. (one of my first tanks).

I'm very retentive when it comes to getting Tap Water anywhere near my tank. I use RO water to soak my test tubes in after I rinse them, and I wash them out. My wife laughs at me. (for this and many other things actually)

Just realized this is an older thread. Sorry... ::)

But out of curiosity, how are things doing?? Been almost a couple weeks...
