Hummer Alert

For those of use who feed Ruby Throated Humming birds, I was at my folk’s house in North Carolina over Easter, and they have returned there. Now NC is about a week’s difference to use, so tonight I put my feeders out. I only put a little bit of food in each feeder until I see them appear here. I KNOW IT'S EARLY, BUT GET THOSE FEEDER OUT!

Well this was a bust for me! I haven’t seen a single hummer and any change in the amount of food in the feeders. Has anyone else witnessed hummers yet? I actually have to clean and change my food because it’s gone bad.

How long does it last? It's just sugar water right?

Well some say to change it weekly, but I don’t do it until it starts to show opacity….sign of bacteria having fun in that sugar water…..and yes, it’s just sugar water.

Do you add food coloring to it? Someone once mentioned that you should be using "organic" sugar??? What seems to work best for you?

Definitely no food coloring. Just regular old granulated sugar….and it is organic, like all sugar.

The “regular” mix they recommend is one cup sugar to four cups water. The first mix of the season should be one cup sugar to three cups water. This more concentrated mix helps lure the little hummers to your feeder. I actually have been using this more concentrated mix right through the season without issue….they fight to get to it.

Do not use any other artificial sugar substitutes or any of the brown sugars. It must be good old regular white granulated sugar.

I resurrected this thread because I was just out on my porch carbon dosing when a ruby throated humming bird came in to feed. I've had my feeders out for about two weeks or so and this is the first hummer I've seen this year. So get you feeders out there now! Simple recipe.....1 cup regular white sugar dissolved up to 4 cups water. The first feeding you'll want to do 1 cup sugar to three cups water just to attrack the little buggers.

Thanks for the heads up my daughter has a feeder for hummers that she got from her daisy troop.

We put the feeders out last weekend in Brick and already have a few regulars.

I was out on the porch yesterday evening between 7 and 8 PM, and it was like a World War I dog-fight with so many hummers wanting to come in to feed. I have two feeders out, around the corner from each other, but they know this, and being so territorial, check both feeders before coming in to feed. I'm guessing many of what I'm seeing now are still in the process of moving North.
