I need your thoughts...

My girlfriend just started to clean one of my fish tanks with the a dish sponge that has touched different detergents and anti-bacterial soaps the past couple of months, she squeezed it out with running water a lot until she did not see any foam come out. Please give me your thoughts on this.

First of all I would get a new girlfriend, just kidding.

How big is your system? How long was the tank water exposed to the sponge?

If you have enough water volume and she didnt expose your tank water to the sponge for too long then you should be fine. But if you have a 12 gal nano and she cleaned the entire tank, you may be in trouble...

Don't want to be doom and gloom, but my father lost a whole 90g tank full of fish using a dish sponge, the sad part is that he thought to use a new one out of the package so it wouldn't have soap on it. Hopefully you have a big tank, I'm not so sure you can get all the soap and or other bad bacteria out of a dirty sponge either, Good luck

on the safe side - if you could.... try to do big water change (10% to 20%) everyday for a few days...

Was the tank in use? Or was it empty and just getting cleaned out?

Or did your girl friend just clean the outside like the glass and rim for salt creep?

But Darren makes a good point. Should this become a serious issue, a new girl friend may be in order!

Have to agree with everyone. If this was in an active tank, multiple large water changes may be a good idea.

If this was an empty tank that just needed a cleaning, I'd be cautious to use it for anything other than a FOWLR (after extensive rinsing).

Good luck.

At least your girlfriend was trying to help. Gotta give her that. I won't let my wife do that though. I stay out of her purse, she stays out of my tank. :encouragement:

your userid handle is very appropriate for this thread...."Arrg".

The only better one I could think of would be "D'oh!"

I dunno about a sponge but one time someone used a water bucket for detergent and when that same bucket was used in a FW tank - all the fish were dead hours later. I'd be leary of the sponge. What's the tank set up? or is it empty? more info would help!

I agree many water changes and hopefully no issues.
Sirfragalot, I hear you. I won't even let my wife wipe down the canopy. If she claims its to dusty I wipe it down along with the glass.
This way if something goes wrong only have myself to blame, which is better than arguing with the wife.

Thank you everyone for your info it is a 34 red sea max no fish just had a few corals and inverts that I would prefer not to die but we will see what happens. It could have been a lot worse.
