I'm alive....with new company

So I learned the hard way that I'm not 20 anymore, and can't get around as quickly as I used to. I managed to break my big toe while chasing after Oscar. :-X I literally fell INTO the house, over my own shoes, and not only felt the crack but heard it, too. Since I refused to be put into a jumbo cast, I've been hobbling around the best I can - still taking care of everything else.

Oscar went from 9 pounds to 14 pounds. ;D Here are some new pictures.

Owwwwwwwwwwww! Sorry to hear about the toe! WOW! I hope it feels better soon.

He sure is cute and in spite of being nearly 50% bigger he still looks like a peanut compared to Max!

LOL Phyl. He does look like a peanut next to Max, doesn't he? Now that you said that, I found myself calling him "peanut".

His little teeth are razor sharp. Another nickname of his is "Piranha". The biggest challenge thus far has been to teach him that hands and body parts are NOT chew toys. Our assortment of toys has multiplied faster that rabbits in mating season.

For the past few days the two boys have brought tears to my eyes when they started really bonding. I never thought I'd see Max act "that" way again, but he is. Oscar sure has been a blessing.

A few more pics....my Max included, of course. :)

wendy what breeder to you get the pup from? My girlfriend bought 2 american bulldogs almost a year ago, awesome dogs Ill have to get her to post some pictures

Nice looking pup Wendy!

Max is lucky to have a little buddy!

I broke a bone in my foot about five years ago, it was a tibial sesimoid, finally had to have it removed. What a horrible experience, I still have numbness from the nerve damaged cuased by the surgery. Be very choosy about your foot doctor. Hope it gets better soon!

We bought him in PA from Dawn Morrow. :)

Bax: OMG, I'm so sorry to hear about your foot. This wasn't the first time I broke a toe. In fact I'm not supposed to have my left big toe anymore. When I was 17 and while on vacation, my horse stepped on my toe. The doctors wanted to amputate it because it was so smothered, and the nailbed was completely demolished. My father threw the biggest fit, and insisted they try and save the toe. The doctors told me I'd never grow another toe nail, and that I'll probably be in pain for the rest of my life. Boy were they wrong. Yes, that toe is somewhat funky looking, but I have full use of it. And 3 years after that accident a nail started growing in. It's thick and yellowish, and I need coral cutters to trim it, but it's there, and with nail polish you'd never even know something was up with that thing. :D

With this toe I've learned it's really helpful to wear sneakers instead of sandals. Makes me hobble less, and the pain more tolerable. It definitely feels a whole lot better than it did last week at this time.

Ok, maybe just me but man does that sound funny. I'm not sure what full use is or if I have full use of ANY of my toes! LOL!

LOLOLOL. You've got a point there. I should have said "It's getting the job done." ;D

Today we're going to the vet, to continue his vaccinations. In the meantime the little bugger has been keeping me quite busy. He is now fully house-broken. :)

Welcome to my playground :-X

What do you mean, Deb & Brian when you say you "almost" want a new puppy? C'mon, you both know you want one really, really badly. :)

Well, the vet visit went pretty smoothly. He's up to 20.2 pounds now. I opted to have him vaccinated against Lymes disease, but believe I won't be repeating that vaccine again, especially since the injection site was extremely sore and painful for him yesterday. He was SO groggy, totally unlike him.

I did tons of research on the subject yesterday afternoon, and will share my findings with my vet when I go back in 4 weeks. Don't want to subject him to any unnecessary vaccines.

As of this morning Oscar seems to be his old self. FULL OF IT. ;D

So Wendy the second dose is needed to complete his vaccination against Lymes. Does that mean you'll opt not to get the second dose of it (leaving the first dose ineffective)? I'm just curious as to what led to your decision. We have not vaccinated Zenni against lymes though we may end up having to have our lawn treated for ticks because they seem to be really bad this year. Not sure how effective that is though since the squirrels and rabbits run through the yard like they own it. Thanks for your thoughts!

Yes, Phyl, I will NOT have him get the booster for lymes, therefore rendering the first one ineffective.

As of now, I have not sprayed my yard/lawn yet, as I am a bit paranoid about using pesticides. We have found 2 small ticks on Max so far this season, but I'm willing to bet he picked them up during the daily walk (nose and full body in shrubs). As soon as the weather clears up, I will spray alongside the fence, in the late evening, so that it can all be dried by the next morning.

Simon was vaccinated against Lymes regularly, and he still ended up with the disease, even though he never had a bad enough outbreak that required antibiotics.

Here are some articles that I found quite helpful in my decision not to vaccinate Oscar (Max won't be getting them anymore either, even though it is quite difficult to find ticks on him due to his coat.)

I'd also like to add that neither one of my dogs ever gets Frontline or any other topic treatment for fleas and ticks, as I do not want to subject them to poison. :) A "little" garlic mixed in the food goes a long way. (large amounts of garlic are toxic)

i had both maxmus and caesar tested for lyme---caesar has lyme, maxmus does'nt--we had maxmus vaccinated to help prevent lyme and had no issues with soreness or anything else
caesar had to have pills for a month--and will never be able to get the shots---vet said once they have lyme, the shots dont do anything
if i remember correctly, i think they get the shot every year---cant remember for sure...
we also use this stuff ( again, dont remember the name, bought it from the vet ) that we have to put on the dogs right behind their neck, every month--this stuff kills the tick before it has a chance to bite and with the evergreens we have that surround our yard, we are always pulling ticks off of them
i also bought this yard spray that i have to spray the yard with---soon

Wendy

That big puppy is cute! 20 pounds already!

We had my springer vaccinated for Lyme's regularly until she became so old, she just never went out without an escort and never made it far in to the yard. Not that there aren't ticks in the short grass, but we just felt it wasn't worth it once she hit 17 1/2, bless her! Seeing what it can do to some dogs, and people, I am pro the vaccine. But, I completely understand anyone's concern with any vaccine.

I can't believe even a tenacious tick could make it's way through Max's beautiful coat!

Wendy, Mighty nice pals you have there!!! We haven't done the shots on Lil bear either, but we do frontline,it works really well for the dog, cause the ticks that do cling on to him dont bite him and wonder off.The bad thing is a few strays have come inside, which of course freaks everyone here at our house out.The ticks are abundant here this yr.And with the ample amount of rain, and some nice heated days,Im sure the whole bug world will be the same in a few weeks.Continued gd luck on the pup :)
