I'm back from vacation and.....

I did not want to come back!!

I went out to Oceanside, CA about an hour north of San Diego and wow...what a gorgeous area of the country!! MOuntains everywhere, then the Pacific Coast where the cliffs just fall off into the water!!

I went out there for a military function. My girlfriends uncle is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marines and he was the Commanding Officer of Marine Wing Support Squadron 372 and he was being honored in a Change of Command Ceremony. That happened Wednesday and I was amazed by what he did. He was deployed to Afganistan for about 11 months where is Squadron built the largest ever airport in the history of the military in Afganistan in 4 months. He was awarded a Bronze Star for what he did....awesome ceremony!! Never saw a ceremony like that before. Now they are sending him to Rome in January for 6 months to attend NATO College. When he is finshed there he will most likely be promoted to Colonel. Trying to figure out if we can get out to Italy while he was there as he will have a 2-3 bedroom apartment there!!

We also stayed on Camp Pendelton in the South Mesa Lodge....this place gave the Hilton a run for its money!! All the rooms faced the ocean and you could see the coast from all the rooms!! Awesome hotel!! Staying on base was really cool too...helicopters and jets flying over head constantly, driving down the road and seeing a humvee on a training run with a huge machine gun and gunner on top!!

So we also went to La Jolla to see the hundreds of seals then drove up the Pacific Coast Highway. Then we went to Temecula...known as the new Napa Valley, for Wine Tasting. So incredibly gorgeous out there...the mountains and the grape fields everywhere!! The wine was incredible too!! Bought 8 bottles!! Then we went olive oil tasting and WOW!! We brought home about 6 bottles of olive oil.

Then we went to Disneyland...never went there before always been to Disney World. It was ok...definitely more geared to the kids.

Then we went to the San Diego Zoo....man that place is huge!! Saw baby Pandas and Koalas, along with all the other animals!!

I really didn't want to come back home, but we all know we have to go back to work some time. I can't wait to get back out there!! And since my gf's uncle owns a home out there...I have a place to stay now!!

Hey Steve.. I lived in SoCa for a few years and would move back there in a Heartbeat.. My wife is a jersey girl and got home sick so we moved back :(.. Sorry to say but NJ isn't my cup of tea.. I moved from the UK for sunshine and palm trees not toll roads and green heads and pay to go on a beach..

Im so jealous Steve! I did almost the same thing as you last summer, we camped at San Onofre for 4 nights, which was just south of you! Im very upset Im not going this year, I love southern california. Its one of the few places I can picture myself. I saw a european repair shop on the PCH with windows almost floor to ceiling facing the ocean, and it was kind of up on a little cliff. I died right there.....

I could never deal with the traffic on the west coast. And then when it rains one inch - people slow to a crawl. When I say - let's go out to eat. The answer is oh there's a place nearby - it's only a 15 minute drive- but that's like 30 miles of driving. Dude that is not nearby! :)

Weather, views, etc - you are 110% right - the left coast is fantastic. Plus you never have to worry about a noreaster in April... ::) I'd also probably get a heart-attack because I'd go to that fast food joint out there - in N out burger. Five guys is good but i fell in love with in n out long ago.

Hawkeye....the traffic was not bad at all!! And we traveled during rush hour a few times. And In-N-Out Burger was awesome!! But you are right....everything is 15-20 miles away....Where her uncle lives in Oceanside, they are trying to build up a lot, but it's not quite there yet.

The weather was as they call it "June Gloom." It was always Overcast in the morning until about 11AM when it all burned off. Except on the coast...it was overcast there all week, but inland was always gorgeous!!

Hopefully your girlfriend is super pround of her uncle. Thats awesome!!!!!! Nothing like the men and women that work to protect our country. Oh and Im glad you had a good time in Cali. ;D
