Here is the fix….but it’s hard to see because it’s clear:

Reservoirwithacrylictop.jpg

It’s a half inch piece of acrylic that fits snug up to the edge of the insert of the top:

I apologize, I’m just gloating a bit on how well this DIY turned out. Just finished the second base unit and put it in place. I’m very happy with the cleaner look, the way both containers fit the small side area of the stand (like it was originally planned), and that now I am that much closer to starting to work on the side cabinet.

It just seems that I’m always working on the penultimate design…..just don’t’ seem to be able to get to the final one…..there’s always something to improve.

With my cracked lid on the cooler-style fresh water reservoir (post 184 above), the ½ inch acrylic just sat on top of the lid. So I first slathered on some silicone caulk between the lid and acrylic. But I wasn’t happy with that! Silicone doesn’t stick well to high density polyethylene (the lid) and the piece of acrylic.

So my next step was to drill and tap the lid/acrylic and install four ¼ - 20 oval head nylon bolts.

Between the silicone and the bolts, this should do it….until the next design change. Dance

I’ve had what I term a “rescue” clown for about three plus years. She is missing her dorsal fin. Something the previous owner had must have chewed it off. She originally was paired, but dad jumped shortly after I got the pair. Since then she’s been living in my sump, because she didn’t play nice with the other pair I had in the DT. I was always interested in finding her another mate, but concerned about making that match.

Anyway, I recently picked up a small Ocellaris from John (jpkrze), and cautiously introduced this new fish to big momma. There first introduction was with junior in a clear plastic quart jug, so that the two could see each other. I saw no visible signs of aggression on the part of big mamma. So after about an hour and a half I freed junior into the sump. Junior immediately went over and spent the afternoon swimming right next to big momma. And big momma still showed no aggression; almost like junior wasn’t even there. I’ll keep my eye on this new pair over the next couple days, and if all works out, I think these two will eventually get moved over to the JBJ28…..a place of their own! :love_heart:

Match maker... And all this time she thought no one thought she was pretty enough because of her deformity. Nice work!! I have a. GSMC who doesn't seem to like anyone. Maybe if you start a reef dating website (R-date.com) you can help me find someone for her so she stops pouting around the anemone all day...

Creatures in My Sock

I am amazed of the “hard” things that have been growing on the 1 ½ inch PVC pipe that enters my filter sock. I have many small black things, many as small as the head of a pin, that are not movable, but hard as a rock. But I also have three very large tube worms that I’ve watched grow over the past year or so. As far as I know, this is the only place I have these large crinoids.

Now the question, should I leave this stuff be or scrape it off?

Those are vermitid snails. I started with just one. Now they are prolific as can be. I must have 200. No real harm but they are hardy and hard to eliminate so if you are concerned I'd say get them out.

Dave, I do have vermetid snails…..look at the base of the worm in the picture….I believe these are vermetids growing on the worm……considerably smaller. I don’t think these big guys are vermetids…..I don’t think vermetids get that big.

I’ll repost the picture so you don’t have to go back a page:

I have a ton of both variety. The larger one are more interesting looking but from what I can tell, still vermitids. I have more of the smaller ones too.

I that location would be hard to see them out. But my experience is that they are worms. I've got a few just like them that have the same exact tube. It just grows as the surrounding monti encrusts it. The vermitids tubes usually stay narrower, IMO.

Here's one of mine that looks like your picture, complete with the web it casts

and these are more traditional vermitids - skinny long tubes and not coiled.

both kinds cast a web, look the same when I've pulled the from their shells or seen them peek out. Both have what looks like an operculum. I've tried to research them before and it seems they're 1000s of different vermitids. Basically worms or vermitids probably have little difference as they both cast a web to filter feed. My guess is the only difference is a operculum.

David, thanks for your input on this. I’ve been reading and I believe you were correct in identifying the large ones that I have as vermetid as well. I also have the smaller ones that are the common ones found in many aquaria….and reproduce easily. The larger ones are not as common and don’t reproduce as fast as their smaller cousins.

Note that they are not worms, they are snails.

HERE’s the first read I went through to better understand vermetids.

I'm thinking I should clean up that pipe……anyone have thoughts or input on this?

With recent discussions about vermetid snails, I was scratching my head about your post….”poop holders.”

It finally hit me (I think), that you were talking about the skimmate containers I made back in December:

If that’s the case, HERE is the DIY on how to build one. Very happy on how this little DIY turned out.
