Interesting find.

I look over at my tank from my desk and see my starfish on top of my new 6line. I pull it off a few seconds later but find that it has already killed the fish. i guess the starfish was wandering around and found the burried 6line asleep and decided it was snack time. Oh well :/

Dont quite know. It looks like a sand sifting starfish but it hasnt gone into the sand since i got it. just crawls around all day. Grey with black stripes horizontally across each arm. Orange mouth/ underside of arms.

I believe they are called tiger striped starfish and they can be predatory and are definately opportunistic if they are hungry.

Wow that stinks. Sorry for the loss.I think you should catch that starfish and maybe put him in your sump or refugium.

Not a starfish - serpent star or brittle star most likely. When we say starfish - I think linkia.

Before we jump to the conclusion that the brittle star jumped the fish - is it not possible that there was a problem with the 6line? Brittle stars are quick to jump on anything that shows signs of death or illness.

The only brittle star that I am aware of that will catch and eat fish at night is the green Ophiarachna incrassata. Why all the stores still sell that star is beyond me (it's even in the reef tanks at the Chicago Shedd Aquarium).

But I guess if a serpent star is starving - added with it a meaty fish - well I guess it's possible.

Did you QT the 6line? and do you feed the serpent star? If you are not a heavy feeder in the tank, it may be necessary to supplement food to the serpent star.

The starfish isnt really a serpent star shape. it honestly looks EXACTLY like my friends sand sifter but it hasnt gone under the sand. i feed decently and it has been n my tank for over 2 months now so i dont think it was starving. the 6line was perfectly fine. no signs of it being lethargic, sick, having parasites etc. I guess S%$* just happens
