There are a couple of benefits to moon light that I can think of off the top of my head. Most people try to create as natural an environment as possible and moon lighting ties into the theory (check out Rehypes build with his led lights). Secondly, most bad things in our tanks like to come out at night. Without moonlight you will not be able to see if anything is attacking/eating things in your tank. Those are some more practical reasons, we have them on 2 out of our 3 tanks. From a purely fun aspect, they make your corals look pretty cool.

Not sure if it works but most fish are supposed to spawn during lunar cycles.

The Tunze Controller simulates a 30day lunar cycle, which is what clowns are supposed to follow when breeding. Guess what ?

Mine are breeding

June Lunar Cycle
6/7 (2:12 p.m. EDT) Full Moon - Laid First Cluth
6/15 (6:15 p.m. EDT) Waning Quarter Moon
6/22 (3:35 p.m. EDT) New Moon - Laid Second Cluth
6/29 (7:28 a.m. EDT) Waxing Quarter Moon

July Lunar Cycle
7/7 (5:21 a.m. EDT) Full Moon - Laid Third Clutch
7/15 (5:53 a.m. EDT) Waning Quarter Moon
7/21 (10:35 p.m. EDT) New Moon - Laid Fourth Clutch
7/28 (6:00 p.m. EDT) Waxing Quarter Moon

Can you post the link to that thread please? My Current Sundial 48" came with 4 moonlights built in with enterchangeable lenses (clear and blue). They do light up the tank with a very dim light but I cant make too much out. I was thinking of adding some.

I've always wondered if there is any truth to moonlights helping with coral and fish spawning. I just can't see how this is possible. The moon isn't only light, it controls the tides and gravity as well. I would think that would have more to do with it then how much light is output from an LED.

I do have them, but I've always though about it as purely aesthetics.

FWIW I have (2) 1 watt LED's over my 180g now. They are made to fit on my MH reflectors. It's bright enough for me.
