is this camera good?

Psst... it's a Canon

I'd prefer this one: D40

Thanks Phyl, Is one better than the other? When it comes to cameras I know nothing, the only things I really care about is price, how easy it is to use and quality of pic. I don't want to get one that will take me years to figure out :)That Nikon seems like a really good deal.

That Nikon is a great deal. The cool thing about having a Nikon is that with so many other Nikon users in the club we've done a lot of try-it-before-you-buy-it with lenses at meetings. You'll be able to try a variety of Macro lenses and decide which one you want to dump your dough on.

Also if you really enjoy the camera, get a nice set of lenses for it, you could always upgrade to a D80 or D200 later and use all of the lenses that you bought for the D40.

The Canon is an 8mp while the Nikon D40 is only a 6mp cam, but unless you're blowing them up to poster size (or cropping the heck out of it) you won't care.

You may want to wait for some more Canon to chime in (Brian?) though because I'm a fairly biased opinion!

i bought the wife the same one for her bday got it on e bay for $385 the body only as she has the canon 35mm the lens will work on both also she picked up a 60mm for macro shots works great check out e bay

Thanks, I tried doing a search for the model cannon that BJ's is selling and it seems that only BJ's has it??? I guess that one is made for them? This is the Model 0206B0003(REBL)I tried comparing the 2 cameras but not knowing what all the numbers and such mean I find myself looking at the only 2 things I know megapixels and what's included ie:flash, battery, case, cables and so on.

That's not the MODEL number, but rather BJs number for it. You're going to need to compare actual product name and what's included: comparison

Thanks Phyl, that's what I needed, the comparison helps alot. Yeah I'm not to keen on ebay either, it seems the cameras I did find none of the sellers (company's) have 100% feedback and are passing refurbs off as new.

I've talked to professional photographers about the Nikon versus canon debate. They said go with which one you like better. One is not better than the other. For the shots you want to take what matters is the type of macro lens you have.
I think ours is a sigma 105 macro. Same lens used by a lot of professionals.

Thanks Deb, I really want the most bang for the buck (most options and items included for the money) the lens I could always get later. One thing I don't like about the Nikon is the flash is sold separate.

Not true, Tom. There is an on-board flash as well as the ability to add a flash:

Built-in Flash: Yes (Auto flash with auto pop-up P/S/A/M: Manual pop-up with button release)

Not that I'm trying to sell you on the Nikon or anything! LOL!

You could also go into a Ritz Camera store and hold both to see which one you like the feel and responsiveness of.

When I was shopping I went in and used the 200 and printed off some of the pictures I took in the store.

I totally overlooked that!! Thanks for pointing it out, I think that's what I'm going to have to do, go to a store that has both and compair side by side. my eye's are starting to go buggy from reading and still no closer to making a decision.

The guys at the Ritz Camera in Freehold are great. They have one guy in the store that's a Nikon user and the other one is a Canon user so you'll probably get a good balance of information. They're both professional photographers as well.

Tom, comfort is also one of the bigger things to contemplate. You need to hold the cameras in your hand and feel which one is more comfortable with different ranges of motion. You don't want a camera that may hinder you in doing anything especially when you are taking pictures on the go. I like the fact that the f stop and shutter speed dials are within reach of my stubby short fingers, and I don't have to use my left hand to support the weight of my camera when I do it.
