Jgraz's march to 200DD

Did a little work in the basement today.
Hard plumbed in the salt mix tank and also made space for the newly acquired frag tank. And also built a PVC light stand for the frag tank as well. Still waiting for new bulkheads to come in so I didn't get a chance to drill yet. Hopefully this weekend.

Thx Dan
It's really starting to come around now. Things are growing great and everything is nice and stable.

I thought you were tearing down your frag tank? Looks great either way, what's the tall tank in the front of the picture?

Well I did tank down the 80g frag. But then I got a great deal on the 30 and couldn't pass. So I made a little room. The other tank is my refugium/DSB. 65 gal, with about 4-5" sand bed and a bunch of rubble and macro in it. Also I sometimes find a coral here and there.

I'll double check the size when I get home but they are nothing special. I think 1"slip x 3/4" mpt PVC adaptors.

I double checked and I had the right size. Here is a closer pic of one leg

As you can see all I did was cut out the eggcrate. 1 or 2 little spots of glue keeps it in place.

Hey john how's it going? How about a pic full update

Seriously slacking on the updates John.

Not much to post about. I was lucky enough to have visited a fellow reefers home a couple of months back and then he visited mine, resulting in more then a few sps now growing well. All growth has been spectacular under the T5's. I am very happy I switch to them, and I'm considering switching my sons tank to them as well.

As to the colors, they could be better. I'm not exactly sure as to the cause. Red Bugs(more on that later) or nutrients. My phosphate-.02 and Nitrates-undetectable, and obviously in a good place, and I have little to no algae growth anywhere including refugium. So I may just need to feed more, but I am also lightly stocked fish wise so its not exactly the best thing. I have tried using Reef Frenzy but it pretty much send my skimmer into a fit so I stopped. Another reefer mentioned Reef Roids so I may try that. I am also not the type that remembers dosing supplements every few nights, so there is a better then good chance that I will start the roids then forget again for a while. Ultimately I think I need more fish so I may have to open up the wallet get a few. But I must say I find the mark-up on fish repulsing after seeing the wholesale prices. Its robbery in every sense of the word.

A few weeks back I was looking closely at a couple of colonies to see if I could notice any reason for my color issues and found red bugs. It happens, had them before, probably have them again. They were dealt with swiftly and are now gone. And in their absence I have noticed so color-up in the most affected corals. I will continue to keep a close eye on the acros though. My dipping regiment has gotten better but if the RB can make it through then AEFW can make it through as well. I have seen no evidence as of yet to suggest that they are there though. I really need to come up with some type of QT system for corals, but its though to set up when I only acquire 1 or 2 pieces at a time.

I have been looking into different ways to assist with nutrient export and had long considered giving the Zeo sytem a try but as I stated above, daily dosing does not behoove me. I also looked into the system that Darren(DNOV) is running but cost kept me away. So I decided to give Bio-pellets another shot. So far, so good, as you can see by the numbers stated above. But I have no desire to rely solely on them I am running about 2/3 of recommended amount and will not go any higher. It seems to be a good place that still allows my refugium and DSB to function as well.

I still can't seem to keep Zoa's, Paly's, and Shrooms happily. They look great, I add them, they get really, really small and never spread. Don't know why. I have a few different high end shrooms in the system, Game Over, Tye Dye, Flaming Watermelon, Lava Lamp, and Nuclear Sunsets. All have done nothing as far as growth or spreading is concerned and all have been in the system for well over 2 years and are as small as the day I got them, all about the size of a dime or smaller. Wish I knew why, but I don't. anyone want to venture a guess, please do.

Guess that's about it. I'll try and grab some pics tonight or tomorrow and post them up.

Were the shrooms under LEDs? Mine have been under t5s and low and are doing well. Maybe even try to spot feed them a bit, they will take some food.

Sorry to hear about the bugs John hope you have gotten rid of them. As for colors I believe you are right besides steady alk and cal numbers I believe lighting and higher nutrient levels are key and what better way to bring up the nutrients then with beautifully colored fish :)

I used to feel that keeping low numbers meant healthy coral and I was dead wrong. Feeding your tank and Nutrient export I believe Are what to strive for. Corals gotta eat!
As for the ridiculous mark up on fish, I don't see any way around this I guess there is a crazy markup set to cover loses I would hate to see how many fish die from collection, storage and transport before they reach our tanks :(

They did spend a bit of time under LED's but have been under T5's for a while now. I'll try to move them into some lower light and see how it goes. Something I never do is spot feed, perhaps I'll give it a go.
