So the next thing in my trip "backwards in time" is to modify my old Kalk reactor to be more dependable. I stopped using it when I went to two-part and honestly it was a great feature even if it sometimes gave me trouble. I'm going to ditch the magnetic stirrer in favor of apowerhead plumbed through the wall of the cylinder a la GEO. The magnetic stirrer was often pain in the butt as it would stall in the kalk if the layer got thick. I'm also modifying the top to a quick release for easier cleaning, charging etc.
It occurs to me that as my tank fills with corals:
1) I am going to need to account for increased Ca demand, probably buy or build a second chamber for my Ca reactor.
2) I will Need to address flow issues, adding back my 4th Vortech and maybe replacing the other end with another MP60W or other flow device.
3) Will need to evaluate returning to some of the methodologies I have abandoned at this point ie Biopellets or other carbon dosing, supplements like iodine and potassium, etc.
Added today:
Red Serpent Star
Yellow Longnose Butterfly (Hawaii)
Two Small Flame Angels (Christmas Island) (It's an experiment)
Rainford Goby (Impulse purchase)
5 Tiny Blue Chromis (Restarting the school)
2 Acro Crabs (corals need commensals!)
5 Scarlet Hermits (been a while since there were any in my reef)
I was waiting for a RED serpent star, then bought the other $200 worth of fish to go with it. I want to see if the angels will pair. My chromis have stopped shoaling, hoping some new members will get them out again.
I got them from LiveAquaria. I was hoping for Trapezia, but I got the little pocillopora crab ones the usually have. No matter, they moved right into the coral heads.
All the fish are out and feeding now, except for the Rainford goby, I think those guys are kind of small and shy. It was out when I put in in th tank but it's hiding now. The flame angels are all over the place picking on rocks.
I have never seen Chromis that small, but I imagine they are just as tough. It's funny to see a school of tetra-sized chromis swimming with one of my mongo six-year-old chromis!
Woohoo! Go Jim!
do your little angels have rounded or triangular anal fins? I had understood that Judi/female flame angels have a rounded fin, and males have a triangular anal fin. Fingers crossed that you either have a boy and a girl or two girls!
I bought the smallest size hoping that I got two girls and they would eventually make a pair. They seem very happy, swimming around separately and picking at the rocks, so far they have mostly avoided each other but they have each picked a side of the tank One of them has a broken stripe on his side (like an "I Ching") which makes them easy to tell apart...I just checked, one has a pointed anal fin, one rounded.
