It might be OK. In other applications you wouldn't want a square because the media could pool in the dead zones in the corner. In this application, you're never going to be looking to disolve all of the media and it's just going to settle anyway, so I think you'd be OK.

I'd be interested in hearing your results if you try it.

If you could get your hands in there you could creat a spray bar from kalk pump so all kalk becomes saturated.. i made my old reactor out of 4inch pvc and a old coralife ss-65. it came out a little to tall but i over powered it with a mxijet 1200. any info needed contact me..hope this helps
