Kole Tang

Hey all... I purchased a Kole Tang a few months back because I had a Calerpa issue and someone recommended it... great fish and beautiful but a big bully for my tank... I believe he has killed my lawnmower blenny by constantly chasing him every time he saw him... now he is chasing my spotted diamond goby. This is only occasionally at this point but now I see him nudging the mandarin every time he goes into any if the caves that he calls his which by the way is all of them. The only fish who doesn't get bullied by him is the Yellow Tang... I am starting to think he might have to go even though he's a gorgeous fish... I am putting out a feeler to see if anyone would be interested in maybe a trade for another fish or coral? Also is this normal and if I get rid of him will someone else become the bully and it's just nature?

Unfortunately fish can have different personalities, and a bully will be a bully. If you want to have other fish in your tank, I would pull him. Also, since he is established, he will really take a nasty attitude towards new comers.

My Kole tang is a bully. At least in a 4ft tank. Now he's in another tank by himself. After I removed him other fish seems to be more relaxed and came out more.

Yeah... the more i watch him the more i see it's a territory thing... when ever he sees anyone near his caves he goes after them... but he's not biting them just chases them... and the ones who don't run he turns around and just starts whacking them with his tail until they finally leave his cave... even my sally light foot crabs...
Maybe i'll see if one of the stores will take him for credit...

thanks...

i had a yellow eye kole in a 120 - added when small and was a model citizen except towards other tang in which he just displayed the usual "get out of my house" attitude lol. It is a bristletooth type of tang (ctenochaetus) vs the yellow tang (zebrasoma)- and in fact you can see both of these tangs in all their splendor in hawaii. I've seen photos of schools of them (yellow AND kole together) clearing algae off the sea turtle's back. sorry to hear he is being a bully.
