Kev where those first ones from Trop? I got a frag from them too.

Zoas can live and thrive in a variety of water conditions. Lots of zoas are found right around SPS so to say they are low nutrient or even low light is not true for all of them. In fact they have been found in 800-1000 PAR levels in the wild and thriving.

Certain types of asterinas can go after zoas, there are too many species and they are too similiar to really tell them apart. The only real ID out the which is not really proven, is the speckled ones are the bad ones.

I started it to take them out as soon as I saw one on top of my sunny Ds......I got one polyp of the sunny Ds at last year frag swap and in about 2 to 3 weeks it multiplied to 6 polyps in total then I so the asteria star on them and since then the sunny Ds are not growing or multiplying any more....some other zoas just melted away.

Yup they had a bunch of them on the racks. I eyed them up last time I was there and decided to grab them this weekend. I agree with zoas being able to thrive in cleaner water, in my tank I have sps, LPS and softies which all seem to be happy. I run pretty low nutrients in my tank and they all do pretty well. In my experience they can also handle more flow and more light than most people think, most of mine are in pretty high light and fairly high flow.

Yes I do but I started it to take them out whenever I see one on the glass.....hope one day I have none.

I had an asterina problem in my old tank and lost quite a few zoas to them. I added a harlequin shrimp and it took care of them rather quickly.

That is a very good idea but what about after the stars are finished what do you feed the shrimp?

Chocolate chip stars are the popular choice or just return it to the LFS.

Kev I agree that high flow is important to zoas as well. Zoas seem to be a coral that there are a lot of "myths" about that just keep going year after year.

I'll have to give the shrimp a try, thanks a lot guys for the info.

I believe they are orange rainbows. They are part of the growout a few of us are in. A bit closed up from me messing around in the tank but they are very nice when fully opened.

What's the amazing green and orange in the lower left corner?

That's a scoly I got a while back. It is super bright green with red and orange streaks. It's hard to get a picture of it that doesn't look fake, especially since I installed the reefbrite

New zoa I picked up a week or so ago. It's tiny, one of the smallest I've seen but it's very bright
