LED conversion suggestion help Aquapod 24 G

OK so my son wants a tank in his room. Fresh or saltwater is up for debate at this point.

I have an Aquapod that I used as my QT but now is running with no real use so it could be his.

One thing I HATED about the AQPod is that it has power compacts.

Now I really don't want to spend much on converting to LED, I have seen the kits on reefbuilders but while they are very nice I don't think for the next 5 years he is really going to be into keeping a full blown reef so they are overkill. Saltwater maybe but max would be some kenya tree or it could be fresh water.

Anyone have any ideas for cheap DYI or has anyone done it themselves?

If he is young and you don't know if this is a passing ambition I suggest a nice tank of small African cichlids. They are freshwater and hardy, hard water so you can use ro waste water for water changes and they have wonderful personalities, are easy to breed and don't require expensive lights. And, as fresh water goes, they are very colorful too.

I am sure an LED conversion for cichlids would be very cheap considering they don't need the intense lighting :)

I am more south american guy with cichlids but that might not be a bad idea. The idea is what I was getting at though that I will not need reef lighting.

I like South Americans too but it seems like they always need a bigger tank to thrive...

Good point a pair of oscars are not exactly going to thrive in that tank.
I do figure on doing little fish most likely salt or fresh, little guy is pretty set on it. Which also means I need to build a stand for him. But will wait till I have a better plan for that. Of course the other option is to scrap the AQPod alltogether and find him something smaller.

My son is going to be 10 in a couple weeks and has a reef in his room for a couple years now and is already a full blown reefer, I don't know how old yours is but if he has been around reef tanks as my son is he probably won't be to interested in fresh water. I would start with a simple salt set up like soft corals, maybe mushrooms, clove, Xenia, grows fast, sways alot and will keep his interest and a couple easy colorful fish.
It will be like dads tank only easier.

If you go that route let me know I have all of the above and will give it to you, we are now upgrading his 20 to a 40b and moving to other corals

He is 7 so yes could end up on that route...we have two full time tanks and a temp pond in the summer...2 fresh planted tanks and one reef so is pretty used to both.
But if he goes reef it will be exactly what you are suggesting.
I figure I have to get rid of all the PITA parts of the tank add ATO in the stand etc if he goes SW if fresh I don't have to do any of that YET. If he changes over in 3-5 years then can re-upgrade.

George do those come with all the drivers or do you have to add them on? Swapability makes them interesting.

You could slap some Ecoxotic Stunner Strips in there.

Yep that was what Ethan suggested too. Seems to be a reasonable and easy solution. I can maybe string some of the two different strips the what are they the stunners and the pros?
Might be the way I go.

I know many people were having failures with the exocotic strips due to heat. If you go this route make sure you have fans blowing across them.
