here's what i do.
1. make sure the glass is clean
2. set my white balance to a white item in the tank. you can even put a white paper plate in for a minute. it is very important to get a real understanding of the white balance setting on any camera. they all have it. even the junky cameras. if you cannot find the custom white balance setting you can always use the cloudy day setting. that sometimes comes out close.
3. you MUST set your setting to MACRO. i even have a setting called super macro on an olympus point and shoot camera that i have. it is the icon that looks like a flower. a tulip i think.
4. while looking with one eye thru the viewfinder, not lcd screen, focus on what you want by pressing the shutter button HALFWAY down and keep it halfway. You will see a little square in your screen showing what it is focused on. you can see with your eye what is crisp and clear. if clear, then press the button down the rest of the way. that is it! one shot is all it takes, now you can look at the lcd to see if it is clear. usually you have to zoom in lcd mode to see the clarity. I always set my focus on the point and shoot to pinpoint. not a wide focus. if something is to the left of my shot that i want in focus, i put that in the center of my screen focus on it by pressing shutter halfway, hold it halfway down and turn the camera back to the right. then i press it all the way down and my focused item is still the thing i wanted in the left of my shot. GET IT?
i can show you how to use a point and shoot more effectively if you want.

Sweet pics everyone and thanks for the tip with the plate Renee I didn't think of that. I think the rules should be changed for the POTM and allow pics previously posted on NJRC.

I don't think it's too hard to hold back one picture for the contest...plus it makes things more fun! If it's something that everyone thinks should be changed, we can start a seperate thread about it. But I would really like to keep it the way it is now.
