Light Alternatives for 12 gal JBJ Nano Cube

I got a 12 gal JBJ nano for my son but the light stopped working and the tank is empty at the moment. I suspect it might be the ballast, I really don't want to spend money on the tank cause I don't know for how long my sons fever for this tank is going to last.

Any idea if just the ballast can be replaced?
Do you know of any other light alternative?

No SPS or any strong light coral is going into the tank.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Depends on if you want to keep the lid or not. If you don't mind taking the whole lid off, any clip on light will do. If you want to keep the lid, then yeah you are probably going to have to replace the ballast or replace it all with some other type of lighting.

I had those connect-a-light things, they were good but much more underpowered than I thought. I bought 3 where I probably should have bought 5 or 6. The other concern I had was that mounting was a pia.

For my 10g IM I use the stock Skyye light supplemented with this - a Mingdak light.
If you search Amazon they come in all sizes and colors for about $20-$40. Maybe a white one and a blue one on simple timers? I expect they'd be easy to mount (they have clips).
FYI, I'm using a 10" blue moonlight version which is mounted on the side of the tank 1" below the waterline. Been working fantastically for months now.
