Lighting fixtures givesburning odor when turning on

When my outer orbit 48" 2 x 150 MH plus PC light comes on it gives off a small burning odor which does not last long. This happens when my PC come on first and than as well when my MH turn on two hours later. The lighting fixture is about 2.5 years old. Is this something that I should be overly concerned about? Is there anything that I can do myself to try and fix the problem. (Keep in mind I am in no way an electrician.)

Just in case anyone cares I think that I found the problem today. It appears that my rocker switch is broken which is what was leadingto the small burning smell. I have ordered a new one from Champion lighting and am hoping that this will fix the problem. If not than it is the ballast to my PC bulbs which will need to be replaced.

Maybe take the bottom panels off and see if you can notice anything somkin a bit or getting to hot when you turn it on. Electrical stuff is somethin you want to fix especially when it's over water!

Check the endcaps that the bulbs plug into. Overtime they become corroded from the saltwater and short circuit. Luckily I was home when my endcap caught on fire and I was able to unplug the lights.

Well for the first time in a long time my first hunch was correct. My rocker switch went bad... For unknown reasons the rocker switch sort of melted where the wire plugs into the switch itself. All I had to do was cut the wire and attach it to the new switch. It was a very cheap fix and thank you to all for sharing your thoughts on this matter.
