Lighting question

My son has a 75 gallon tank and wants to get new lighting for it. I have been trying to talk him into going all t5's but he likes the shimmer of the MH. What would you recommend?

What is the usual ambient temp and what type of coral is he looking to keep? The T5s run a little coolers and you may not need a chiller to keep the temp in line. If he's set on the MHs get one with T5 actinic supplements not PCs. I have a Outer Orbit Pro and love it.

whats the Budget? My brother go the updated Odysee MH with T5's from Aquatraders and it is great.. it's 299 i think. Even if you replaced all the ballasts i still think your ahead of the game. most likely the replacements would be ice cap anyways so even better

Erna we are running T5's on both our tanks and as long as you can get alot of movement at the top you can still get the shimmer affect with them

Did you decide on your lights yet? I use a Hamiliton Technology Metal Halide fixture with actinics on my tank. I like it. Nice shimmering white effect in the tank, with blue at night.

If you haven't decide yet and are interested, I have a Hamilton Technologies 3' DLX fixture with 2 175W MH & 2 96 W PC Blue with ballasts (2 - 175 W (10000K) Metal Halide bulbs, with 2 96 W Actinic PC Blue, 2 - 4" fans, light enhancing metal halide bulb reflector, Black aluminum canopy. Dawn to dusk effect - one control for the metal halides and one control for the fluorescents. Dimensions: L36"xW11.5"xH6.5") The unit is about a year old. Like new, however I would change the bulbs. I paid about $700 originally, woud be willing to let it go for half since I suggest changing out the bulbs.
