Liverock

How long will Liverock live without any fish or inverts in the tank? The reason I ask is a LFS has some seahorses FS and he has two sold already. When I asked why they didn't pick them up he said the guy had to cycle his tank. He said he has been running a tank with LR for 3 months but nothing else in there so he talked the guy into a damsel to cycle the tank. This just doesn't sound right to me. Shouldn't a tank be fine for any type of fish after running with just LR for that length of time? I know you don't want to just dump a bunch of fish in there all at once but I think 2 baby seahorses should be fine.

If that nitrifying bacteria has nothing to process it will die off. Now it might not die off all the way but there might not be enough to process waste from a fish.

The two types of bacteria (1) turns amonia to nitrite (2) turns nitrite to nitrate, will reduce in population if there are no ammonias or nitrates in the system. How long will it take and will they die off completely? Nobody knows is my guess, it probably hasn't been studied and documented. I think that answers your question.

The second part, will introducing livestock be OK under the circumstances. You can know always introduce livestock at any stage. To keep the environment healthy for them you would test for nitrites/nitrates and if you don't have enough of the above bacterias to control them, you can do water changes to balance the system. This method is always a plan b for these situations. I think that covers what you're post was implying.

I speak in general terms, knowing nothing specifically about nitrifying bacteria.

Most bacteria will go into a dormant stage if they do not have the means to continue to reproduce (this assumes all other parameters are there to keep it happy.) If you don’t “feed” the bacteria with fish poop, it will most likely go dormant.

They have taken cyanobacteria (blue-green slgae) and shot it into outer space (no air….freezing temperature…in a vacuum), and it has remained alive. You just can’t kill this stuff.
