Mangroves

Guys
Back during our last meeting @trio91 , @MaxDamage984 , and I got talking. I was telling them that I was thinking of putting a small refug in my overflow after I extend the drain pipe up. They suggested maybe trying mangroves.

Has anyone used mangroves? If so thoughts? Should I plant them in the Display? Overflow? Sump (which I know I would then need a light there)

One option I was thinking is planting them just below the overflow box so my water would filter though them before going into the overflow. Also they would add a nice background to my tank.

you can do them in any of the spots you mentioned. I think the overflow would be pretty cool as a background like you said. They can be a little tough to get growing but once they are established they're a bit easier. You need go make sure to keep salt creep off the stem and leaves by spraying them with rodi water as it starts to build up.

Could I leave them 'floating' and just let the roots find their way to my sand or do I need to provide them a bed closer to the top? I know I need to keep the green lefts above water.

@trio91 Marcus thanks I might order them. 5 for $6 isn't a bad deal. Might just start with 5 to see how they do.

You can float them on a piece of Styrofoam. Poke a hole in it and wedge in the pod. Just make sure that the top part [green] is above the water line. You can bury them too if put sand or rocks in your overflow. Again just make sure the top part is out of the water

Marcus thanks. I'm thinking of floating them right in front of my overflow. Use them to make like a wall between the 'ugly (wife words)' back wall and my rocks.

I just got a CUC from ReefCLeaners and John for some reason accidently sent me 5 or 6 mangroves. I just put them in my sump. They are definitely cool but have not done much.

I'm hoping for more looks than anything hope it helps a little but not a deal breaker is not

I got mine years ago from them. They came as pods, no leaves & it took a while to start growing. I forget if the leaves or roots started first, but each one has several branches now. Just be patient, they grow fairly slow. Mine are on my refuge & have roots shooting all over.
