Are the canister air tight? Is that how suction is developed?

you have to prime them...some of them atleast.....thats what that big button is for

You have to prime them and then they will fill with water sending air out the outtake. Once its filled with water then you turn it on and it moves the water through it. I assume it pumps the water out creating a need to fill the empty space with water which keeps the flow going
