Maxima Clam questions

Hey Dave, clam do move on their as well they are trying to adjust itself to the flow of your tank. Kinda like anemone... how big is the rock that it is attach to can you move the rock? i dont normally recommend clams to be high up once they get decent size they can pack on a ton of weight! If they are attach just leave them on the sand bed with the rock.

With all due respect please stop fiddling with clam too much because that will just further stress it... Then all these debates on whether they need feeding, how to keep them long and so on will just goes right out the window... if they are attached just leave them on that rock, best if possible move that rock to the sand bed. Again as they grow they can pack on a ton of weight having it high is not the best idea.

I agree. Just gonna let mine sit on that rock and see what happens at this point. If he falls I’ll move him back but otherwise I’m going to be hands off.

Good news and kinda strange, mine seems to have attached today too! He moved himself a bit to be more angled but seems secured in place now.

Thanks for the feed back Alex. This rock can’t be moved, he’s at the bottom of the mid third of the tank. I have no plans on messing with him, unless you were going to tell me it wasn’t an issue.

I feel better knowing he’ll move if he wants to.

They’re actually not exceptionally difficult to keep. They require lots of light (SPS PAR levels) and a stable system but overall they’re not much different than a coral.

They do better with phytoplankton feedings (especially when smaller) and use a ton of calcium, so dosing will likely be nessecary.

You should definitely get one though, They look incredible.

From my personal experience and what you can see above the derasas are easier to keep and do better than others.
First they are naturally found on the sand bed, this is important because the byssal opening is not as pronounced because they don't attach the same way. On a sand bed other clams can be attacked though that opening.
Second I think they need less light and appear to grow faster so get out of the wimpy stage (this is a very technical term) faster. Bigger is better for survival IMHO.
Third as someone suggested others get heavy and fall or rip their foot and you know how foot pain is.

At that time LEDs were not as advanced or prevalent. I kept mine under T5 lighting then eventually moved to LEDs. I would say most quality lighting would work(in other words not compact fluorescents).
Feeding is good ... my tank is a dirty mess haha, per my previous post I like the ESV freeze dried phytoplankton but I liked the powder form it used to come in more.
There are other that have it dried phyto. I have been feeding a mixed bunch of freeze dried foods lately. Also live phytoplankton from Algae Barn.
My suggestion is try to get above 3inches and target feed when young.
Other than that and don't get your fingers caught not much to worry about.
