Merv's new 40 gallon build

Merv
Is the tubing long enough to dampen the pump vibration? I thought you would have made the section of pipe from the elbow to the valve tubing instead.

On my old setup a lot of the "pump noise" was coming from the sump. It was acting like a drum an amplfing the pump vibration. I ended up putting the sump on 1/2" styrofoam and then lining the stand with soft waffle foam, like those mattress pads. Something to think about anyway.

That overflow is tiny, it's amazing you can even get that elbow in and out.

I just had another thought (2 in one day, wahoo) Can you replace the elbow with a "T"? Then in the top of the "T" glue in a small section of pipe and place a cap on top. Drill a 1/4" hole through the cap and the pipe. Then you can turn the cap to adjust the size of the air hole to find the sweet spot.

The soft pipe dampens it a bit, but you're right. The next sump I'm putting together will fix that-

That elbow can not, would not, shall not, will not and refuses to come out. My one feedback for Marineland is to definitely make that overflow box deeper, they actually put the elbow to the bulkhead, install the bulkhead and then glue the box in place. It is crazy tight in there, I've resorted to long nose pliers and my girl's smaller hands. I have construction man-hands.

Great documentation, Merv. This thread could be a forum in and of itself! It could definitely use a table of contents page at the beginning!

You know that is not a bad idea! I can't count how many times I have gone back to threads where I needed a bit of info and had to go through page after page before I found what I wanted.

thanks John-

made the noise a little less distracting by cutting the pipe in the sump shorter- (it's temporary anyways until i build the bubble box and/or new sump)

the pipe sitting just above the water level in the sump lessened the gurgling since there was no pressure going against the water coming down. It made a ton of splashes though, hence the future incorporation of the bubble box.

here's the video.

YES the VIDEO :)

notice how the pump is now at full open valve (towards the end of the video).

here's the sound of the top of the tank in the overflow box-

while not as bad as yesterday's gurgling, it's still a bit audible (maybe I'm just being picky now)

I didn't do much tank work today, I got distracted when I got home by the garden in the back- I brought home with me 80 lbs of coffee grinds from my local starbucks to dump in the garden and then I went off and made dinner.

I did however, continue in the basement with drilling the concrete. I made a hole large enough to fit a dowel of wood which I hammered in to create a plug. I then attached a piece of wood using screws using the plugs in the wall as anchors

TA-DA!

Right before I hung the RO/DI unit for the picture, the screw I was holding in my left finger got all rickety on me and my drill decided to take a dive and hit my finger. Not a bad cut, but imagine a spinning phillips head bit ramming the corner of your finger.

I'm done for the night.

Ya gotta know when to give up, for today.

I'm watching TV the rest of the night :)

ouch on the finger - looks great otherwise!!!

As a stop-gap - couldn't you place a sponge/filter floss to reduce the amount of bubbles/splash? I agree the noise is a little distracting -even after cutting it shorter.

in the sump?

I'm installing a bubble box soon which cuts down sump noise almost 90%

I will post it up as soon as I get the new sump built and up and running. I ran out of acrylic, I'm gonna make a run to the plastic place tomorrow to see if they have more pieces I can use.

This arrived today...courtesy of the other half....yaaaaay

She is my "Amazon Queen"

Not the South American type, the shopping kind :D

Note the "treat" she has in her hand

8 panels with lighted toggles..... verrry niiiice (borat accent)

I also continued my failed completion of yesterday's RO system install.

The worst part in my opinion is the installation of the RO feed. It's a rental property and I crossed my fingers hoping that I wouldn't lose my security deposit by doing this.... aaggghhhh.

I guess I'll be buying some lead core and a propane plumber's torch at lease end, lol. Looking at the bright side, it's another excuse to acquire more tools.

The excess lines will be trimmed tomorrow....

It leaked here but that's because the line was a little bent and being pulled down. Re-aligning the line fixed the problem.

Tomorrow, after returning from the plastics place, I plan on completing the light fixture. Paint permitting :D

The light fixture was painted today, but since I got my hands on some more acrylic, I figured I'd work on the new sump-

Here are some of the pieces that I already cut earlier today.

and the start of the sump build-

oh there's more, but that'll have to wait till tomorrow- I'm beat!

Merv give it time and the noise will go away.

Trust me it would have to or i wouldnt be living with Kim still.

Oh I hope so- I wouldn't be able to live with myself!

-hopefully this new sump will fix that!
