MH question?

HQI or double ended need the UV shield because the bulbs are not independantly shielded. Mogul based bulbs are independantly shielded. Although depending on the distance from the surface water, they probably should still have some sort of "splash" shield to avoid spray and salt creep from depositing on the hot bulbs.

This is true that there is UV radiation but all bulbs give off UV radiation. The HQI are more but still not enough to harm livestock that is placed low enough below the bulb. If you have the bulb right on top of a coral it might damage it. But having them 18 inches above the water greatly reduces any chance of UV radiation to the livestock. The reading I did also explains that most corals are not bother by UV radiation. They can protect themselves from it.
