Mike's 40 Breeder

Nice tank mike. The 40b is my favorite size tank. Looking forward to future shots as it matures

First off, welcome to the club Mike! I must say, for a SW newbie, you're doing a fantastic job so far.

The sump looks like a pro job all the way. I'd like to make 2 small suggestions to improve it though:

1.) If you don't already have one, add a filter sock on the end of your drain line into the sump (couldn't see it in the sump pic so not sure if you did already.) It will help with catching some of the bigger particles like excess food and other gunk in in the water column that might be hard for your skimmer to take out.
2.) If you can find some dark piece of plastic that you can squeeze in the sump between your light and the skimmer section, that would be a good idea. Otherwise, you'll see coralline algae start growing on the inside of the skimmer body. While it's not a big deal to have it in there, it can become unsightly and make you want to clean the skimmer often. If you can shield the light from that whole section some how, it will prevent most of it from growing in there. You'll want to just lay it on an angle so that the water can still travel over the baffle.

Other than that, the corals you have in the tank so far look healthy and have good colors. Only suggestion I'd make here is to do the water changes more often. Every week is best, but at minimum every 2 weeks will help in the long run.

Good luck with it and I wish you continued success. Looking forward to future pics and following along.

I ran into some unexpected financial woes and decided to part the tank out. I sold off all of the livestock, light, and skimmer. In the midst of my sales, things sort of worked themselves out and I found myself not having to leave the hobby after all. I'm presently trying to reacquire all of the equipment and livestock I've sold. Stay tuned for version 2.0 soon!

Here are some shots from the past few days. First up, the new scape. I was keen to work as many caves and tunnels as possible. I get a kick out of watching fish navigate the intricacies of the rock scape.

...then I went ahead and added some new guys to the tank. It started with a nice pair of true Perculas from Aquatic Obsessions. Then I scored a nice Coral Banded shrimp from the Elos Aquastudio. And, the icing on the cake came last night during a routine trip to Absolutely Fish. I was making my way through the aisles and spotted one of my dream fish for a great deal, so I snatched it up without hesitation.

The colors and personality of this guy are unparalleled. He has been cruising my tank nonstop since I added him. I love watching him snatch up copepods cruising my rock. I hope he plays nice with my inverts, but he is small so hopefully everything works out.

...and a crappy iPhone video from today to wrap things up.

I just started testing/dosing today. Here's where things get crazy!

Nice updat. I think I talked my wife into a 40 breeder tank to set up a nemo tank for my son. Only condition it has to he cheap to start off. So Im
Gonna start it off as a fowlr tank use the large aquafuge for filter and a couple hydor pumps to start. Biggest problem is gonna be what lght to use. Eventually I will be getting an aqua c remora skimmer but think I will be able to stsrt it off with just the aquafuge. I'm looking at your tank and will be showing my wife this thread to try and get her excited for the build :)

looks good! I'm starting up a 40b within the next couple of weeks too. If my dry rock is ever delivered:p Hope mine looks as nice:)

If that's all you're trying to do, I would just run a 4 bulb T5 light, basic refugium (I can help you build one), and no skimmer. You'll be fine for everything but SPS, IMO.

I feel your pain. My rock took almost 2 weeks to get here :(

Here's my frag rack. I'm going to be gluing all of these guys down this weekend and ditch the rack from the display.

And a FTS while we're at it. Don't mind the dirty glass or shrimp molt caught in the Koralia
