MP40's still the way to go?

As the subject says....Are EcoTech MP40's still the way to go? I've started my research on equipment to set my 180 back up, but being out of the game for a while, I haven't kept up on the equipment that is available now. I always ran 2 MP40's. Thinking about getting the upgraded MP40QD's. Keep in mind, it will be an SPS 180.

Not sure about mp's, but from my experience, the gyre are very problematic when it's time to clean. Way too many little parts to deal with. On the plus side they do move a ton of water

Gyre pushes more water than any other pump out there. Not sure what your talking about Sunny.

Then be sure, Ed. There are pumps that push a LOT more water than gyres. A $70 Jeabo pump puts them to shame. It is not just about the water push. They suck at maintenance. The support sucks big time as well. A 2 week old pump dies and it is not replaced. You have to rip it apart one component at a time and prove to them which part is broken. F that, it is a 2 week old pump.

With all that said, I gave the 250(s) a try. Now they are no different from 150(s). The only difference is a fancy controller. They are still the same pump.

I have first hand experience with them and they just are overpriced paper weights - Period.

I have personally only used one type of power heads since entering into this hobby and that are the Jabeo RWs. (I believe they are now called PP). The MPs I hear are very nice but costly. If cost isn't a concern for you then I would suggest sticking with the MPs. The Jabeos are cheaper but I have 1 RW8 and two RW4 (one in a different tank) and *knock on wood* have not had any issues and they are 1+ year old running.

Beside Sunny I have heard of others having issues with Gyres both with the unit it self and customer service. I never personally owned one so I can't speak first hand on them but I seen some in person and they do move some water.

I have four MP's...and I like them, but they are costly. I like two things:

1) They are not as bulky as conventional powerheads.
2) AC wiring is outside the tank.

With that said, I very recently purchased a Jebao PP 15 for 70 bucks, and holy carp, does that thing push water. I think it pushes more than my MP40's. What's unknown for me is reliability.....but for only 70 bucks, I'll be happy with two years.

I will say this, I have my particular gyre break on me 3x in 1yr and it was for a multiple of things. (Motor, rudder, controller) and I will say in my experience, coralvue's customer service was and is spot on....a real A+. Without any issues, I was responded to very quickly and my replacement parts were shipped out without any hassle (for no charge btw). That reason would be the only thing that would, (as far as the gyre is concerned) get me to continue to do business with them.

They are over priced, when this breaks and is out of warranty, I'm going to purchase jebaos crossflow as its close to about $80 or so cheaper

Jebao is a crap company that rips off every company out there. All they do is make clones of other peoples products.

When you talk about warranty support and getting a replacement good luck. I have had a few of these over the years and they have never made it one year without completely failing.

I agree that Jeabo is a crap company. However, that is the idea. If my pump breaks I will just buy a new one. I do not care about the warranty. For one Gyre I can get 4 of these. If each one last a year it is good. I have had 4 of these for 2 years and they are running fine. I also have 2 MP60 and 2 MP40 for 4 years they also have no issues. The maintenance on them is fairly easy. When you clean a gyre you rip it apart and you have so many small parts, you lose one you are done. That said, coralvue better not charge you for parts that they know will break and/or be lost while cleaning.

They make great skimmers and I will always buy it. They just did not get it right with the gyre IMHO.

I have to agree with Sunny. I have the fx150 for about 9 months now. I had a problem in the beginning and yes customer suport was good, but wrong I had to make sure parts were tightly fitted, they thought it was the controller. I hate to take it apart and clean it. I'm always worried what's going to happen next so I just throw it in a bucket with white vinegar mix and let it run. I am thinking about putting mine up for sale or trade for two new jeabos, which is what I was using before, or a used mp40. That's just my 2 cents. I'm also using it on a 93g cube and I feel it is better for a 4ft long tank.

I have the apex WAV and they are great, easy to program, lots of options, right through my controller. I had one issue with a cage falling off the front of one, they replaced the entire pump no charge. If i didn't have these i would probably go with the vortec's as i have an in wall build and no wires would be visible on the side of the tank. I've also had 3 or so jebao's in the past and never had an issue with any of them, just not as controllable as the WAV or vortec.
