My first Reef tank. Going big.. worried about moving it.. Onsite Assembly?

So I am looking to build out my first reef tank. I've been calling some places across the
country for prices and now I am ready to make a couple decisions but I need some advice.

I would like to have a 72x30x30 tank made of glass (starfire 3/4" thick). The vendor I am looking at
is out of state and say its about 1k lbs. I need to get this into a basment in my home
with just a standard set of builder grade steps off a hallway for access. I am just imagining
the nightmare this is going to be. Vision of 1k lbs of tank sliding uncontrolled down my steps.

Has anone tackled a tank move like this? Can you talk about how you did it?

I'm really worried about getting it down there safely and without hurting anyone.
Does anyone know a tank vendor that can assemble onsite? Even for some extra cost?

I hope to be an active member of the community here shortly:)

Thanks,
Mike

How about turning corners and getting it through doorways? I think most doorways are 30" max, so that might be a tight squeeze. I know I wouldn't want to be carrying that on the downstairs side of that install.

I know Tropiquarium has a service that will come in and install the tank itself. To get a company to build on site would be extremely expensive and since the only Jersey tank maker is Coast to Coast then you are probably approaching ludicrous speed.

I had my tank built in Canada and its almost the same dimensions....72x36x28. I hired the movers from trop to bring it into my basement. the tank is 3/4" and only weighs about 650lbs. amazingly enough it only took 4 average sized guys to get it in. I got a quote for onsite construction of the tank and it added $2500 to the price which was already very high. if you're going into a basement do yourself a favor and hire professionals....it will be worth every penny.

I wanted that 280 off Manhattan, but my doors are only 28" BLAH!

I wonder how difficult it is to disassemble a tank and reassemble it :shhh: eek ooohhh

Pm me if you want to keep it private:) Thanks Mike

I read your build thread btw. Very nice tank. I'd love to check it out in
Person at some point.

Mike,
the mover's name is morish trucking and they are in eatontown, nj. I know they go all over because when they finished with my tank they were headed out to doylestown, pa that afternoon to meet a delivery truck for another new tank.

My tank was built by atlas tank works and their site is atlastankworks.com. Tim is very knowledgeable about designing and building tanks and I am very happy with what they built for me. Price wise, they are right in line with prices received from reefsavvy and miracles.
