My Vodka Dosing Experiences

After a bit over a year of research and reading tons and tons of material, on December 16, 2009 I decided to start vodka dosing my 180 Mixed Reef. Since I started I have had many people asking me questions about how it works and if I have seen any results. I will start this thread to record all of my experiences which will hopefully allow others to get enough information to make an informed decision if they are thinking about begining dosing.

I have a 180 Mixed Reef, heavy on SPS. Along with the corals I have a Blonde Naso Tang, Magnificent Foxface, Sailfin Tang, Bicolor Blenny, Chalk Bass, Blue/Green Chromis, a few shrimp, snails and a hermit. Over the course of the last year I have gotten good growth from my corals, but not the colors that I was looking for. And no matter how much I skimmed my water and how many water changes I did, I can never get my Nitrates below 25 and within a few days of the water change they are usually back around 50-75. Hence, this is why I decided to begin dosing vodka.

I followed the recipe from RC...I factored in that my tank is 180 Gallons, my sump holds 20 gallons and then water in my pipes and skimmer, so I estimated that my Gross Water Volume was 205. After subtracting for displacement from my Live Rock and Sand I came to a Newt Water Volume of 145 Gallons.

The next step is to figure out my starting dose. The starting dose of .1mL per 25 Gallons of NWV came out to .58mL. I lowered it to exactly .5mL as to be cautious since losing everything in my tank would be a HUGE loss!! I tested my Nitrates and Phosphates before I began dosing. The results were 50ppm Nitrates and 0 Phosphates. I used Salifert test kits.

I added the .5mL for the first 3 days, saw no change so on the 4th day I doubled the dose to 1mL for the next 4 days...still no change. I went into the dosing not expecting any quick changes and I figure my maintenance dose, once I get there, will be 12-15mL a day.

So now every week my dose is increased ,5mL. I am now up to 2.5mL and then 3 mL tomorrow.

I have not seen much of a change yet, except the water is a bit clearer and instead of cleaning my glass with a mag float every other day, I now clean it once a week. I did start to see a slight outbreak of cyano, which the vodka from what I've been told can either make it worse or cure it, that I've been keeping an eye on. But so far it seems as if it is dying off!

I will keep everyone updated on my dosing as I progress. Feel free to make comments and suggestions or ask questions!!

What were your reasons for starting vodka dosing? are you trying to achieve anything in particular?

I'm trying to achieve a system with 0 Nitrates and 0 Phosphates without the use of macro algea. Also, once the readings are zero, it will allow me to feed the tank more heavily in order to achieve better growth, color and polyp extension from my SPS.

completely understood. I figured. didnt want to assume you had nitrates or anything. but that should help you do it.

Ive been feeding them a mix of elos omegas, elos pro skimmer which is a coral food and KZ coral vitalizers. I think those are really good liquid foods for corals. they are liquids which are easliy extracted by a protin skimmer.

I started dosing Vodka in early 2009 but stopped because of tank issues. One thing I want to point out is that you should have a good skimmer or ensure the one you have is working very well. I believe this was my downfall with dosing. I have recently moved to an older skimmer with a larger pump. It seems to be skimming much better the past week or so. If this keeps up I will put the taller skimmer back with a bigger pump and start dosing. I will open a separate thread in a month or two.

Dont forget about your clowns and can I have a frag of the superman:)?

Oh yeah....I knew I forgot about a fish...my 2 clowns!! You can have a frag as soon as it grows out....Wait I thought you weren't going SPS ;D

Thanks for the heads up!! I have read about having a good skimmer as well. I am running an ASM G3 that has been great ever since I set it up, so I think I'll be ok.

Some good news on the vodka dosing....The small bit of cyano that was forming has completely disappeared!! ;D I've been on 3mL for 3 days now...that's all I have for now...but no more cyano is good news!!

I'm almost through an entire week of dosing at 3.5mL. I just got home from a long weekend and noticed all of my birdsnests are bleaching and dying at their tips. I did have someone dose each day the vodka, alk, & calc. Not sure what is going on. I know that vodka can cause burnt tips, but I don't think 3.5mL in 145 Net gallons would cause that...besides everything looks great with incredible polyp extension....its just the birdsnests.

Now I'm also wondering if it could be the lights....I upgraded from 150W to 250w at the same time I started vodka dosing. So I'm thinking I'm going to move the birdsnests to the bottom of the tank instread of the top and see if that helps at all.

I also tested all my other parameters and they are spot on!!

Any suggestions would be great!!

Thats rough. I would love to help but I personally can't seem to keep birdnest alive. I know they are sensitive to potassium swings. Low potassium could kill them. Other than that I can't say.

I've read a few times of people also dosing vinigar and sugar when dosing vodka. Any reason why?

In our 30g we had two birdsnest frags (the green ORA and the red one with purple tips) that we kept on the sand bed. Got amazing growth out of both of them down there. We lost them in a heat event this past summer and got a new green one which we put up near the top on a frag rack. We have not seen any bleaching, but the growth is no were near what it was on the bottom. Might be time to move it down.
