Mystery of the missing tang

Do the tang police have a homicide division with detectives? I had a very nice juvi naso tang that had been in QT for 6 weeks. (a bit overkill but he had a tank-mate added at week 2 so I decided to restart the clock). I added both new fish to the tank on Thursday and all was well. Both seemed happy and were eating well. No signs of fin nip from the other fish and I was concerned that the hippo tang would go after it (for whatever reason, the hippo tang brutalized a purple pseudo I adopted a couple months back – it took a mirror and about 2-3 weeks for the community to stabilize). Anyway, none of those antics seemed to be at play. This morning I looked at the tank and there was no sign of the tang. The only thing I noticed that seemed out of the ordinary was a RBTA that looked a little more bloated than normal. It had the whole night to do the damage so I guess it’s possible it caught the tang (or the GSMC spooked it into the nem) and slowly got it down. Worst part was that the tang was my ticket to an upgrade. I had convinced my wife that I would need more space as it grew. She reluctantly agreed which was the first sign that she might be able to be convinced. I was also really looking forward to getting the chance to watch it develop from a juvi. I’m not sure I’ll be able to chance another juvi. I think I will have to look for one to adopt that’s a little more mature.

There's a small possibility it's just hiding in the rocks still Dave. Sometimes they tend to stay in a spot once they find a safe one just to "claim" it as their own.

If the new did get it, that would be a shame though. Especially since your upgrade was riding on it. Good luck.

It would be nice if it was just hiding but I doubt it. Not much of a hider (it's been 3-4 days) but I'll keep hoping, I guess. Maybe the tang police showed up after I was asleep and took it out.

I did look in the overflow but it has a cover so it would have taken some Houdini type antics to get it there. Down to the sump is more unlikely given the strainer on the drain pipe. I think the bloated nem was all the evidence I need. Question is, do I try it again or do I assume that I have to wait until the upgrade to add one? Realistically the upgrade is about 2 years off. It would have been sooner maybe if I had the fish but without it I'm looking at 2 years. What are the chances that the other fish will accept a new resident at that point? I've lost other fish but this one has me the most upset yet. Oh well, in light of what others have dealt with after the storm I guess I need to keep things in perspective....

Well the fat pig RBTA split. I guess the big meal was too much to keep it together. I'll think about the plan but I'm a QT guy so there's no way to sneak it. Just not sure if I shouldn't take it to mean something that maybe I need to wait a but longer.


Nah... If the LFS has one I think I'll try again

Just QT it. If your wife asks why just tell her it was getting harassed and you wanted to give it a chance to recop before trying again. :D

Josh, you'd asked for a spawn of the RBTA way back when. Well it's not one of the normal 50/50 splits so its a little small but they grow pretty fast. A little of the tang will live on :)
I also may have one of those no-name pumps with a mag-mount
