I just put up a 40g(breeder) reef mainly with softies and need recommendations on a skimmer. please note i do not have a sump. I never bought a skimmer for a tank this small. Was considering the Tunze nano.
thanks
it may not be the best - but it's pretty "popular" in the sense that there are a lot of them being used and you could probably get a good deal finding a used one.
All I can tell ya is not to go cheap. Get the best one you can afford. A skimmer is in my opinion the backbone of your system. It was hard for me to buck up the cash for mine , I even thought I was crazy! But now I'm so glad I did ;D
I am pretty happy with the Remora C HOB skimmer. We have two of them, one on the 30g and one on the 20g. I have never tried the Octo but am perfectly happy with the Remora
I have the BH 1000. The skimmer has a major advantage that the pump is outside water and doesnt add heat. Unfortunately it is also a big disadvantage, since no matter what I do the thing leaks (really slightly though) at the junction of the pump (I had to arrange my setup so that it drips on my sump and there is no water loss). But other than that it is a good product. Feels solid and has very good customer service.
...I am not that experienced in the hobby, but still feel calling the skimmer the backbone of the system is overdoing it. There are many hobbyists who go skimmerless in favour of higher nutrient content in the water column. As with everything else, the equipment you buy depends on what you plan to keep. If the bioload is light, you could go with a HOB refugium as well while running carbon and phosban in it.
I am at present a undergoing an experiment of letting macro/micro flora/fauna recycle nutrients and have my skimmer off for the past couple of weeks. Water parameters are good with weekly water changes.
as mentioned by gogol, though i am no reef expert as well. i know a lot of individuals not running skimmers that have been very successful. the key/backbone is water changes if decided to go skimmerless. for nanos it's a bit easier since we're only changing out approximately 5gallons of water on a weekly basis plus top off. skimmers would let you have the ease of mind if you forget or out on vacation.
