I like the window idea. Super glue some tracks and have a slide across window. It would look like how Scottie the engineer in Star Trek used to look at the dilithium crystals in the original series.:chuncky:
I swear I was thinking that same exact thing!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Yeah..a plastic hinged/rail window or something of that nature.

This is the first time I am hearing that the reactor needs to be in the dark?

Paul will it fit around the BRS reactors if so ill take a piece..

I know that some stains of bacteria grow quicker in the dark. I wasn't expecting these aerobic strains that we are trying to nurse to be one of them. But I guess it is.

Anyway, if you have THIS BRS reactor and it takes the same size canisters as THIS dual BRS reactor (which I would speculate it does), than your answer is NO.

The exterior of this canister is tapered, and the above is where the canister is now stuck in the pipe……about 2 to 2 ½ inches in.

However, you're more than welcome to two pieces of drain pipe to see if you can do some sort of overlap thing.

When I first started using pellets, I had a BRS reactor, and used to wrap a piece of aluminum foil around it until my fuge was totally off line. Obviously, it was on the outside of the sump.

Yes mine is on the outside of the sump too I will try the tin foil idea and see how that works..

Wow, a super trekie. I’m willing to bet you were out in San Diego when my wife and I mistakenly scheduled a trip while Comic Con was going on in 2011. One night we had to wait an hour an a half to be seated for dinner……and that was only if we were willing to sit with a “single.” Well of course the single was from Comic Con….and no wonder she was single. A little odd, to say the least…..although they probably say the same about us fish folks

Anyway, even though I watched all the original Star Trek shows, I don’t remember Scotty peering through some window to check on the dilithium crystals. So I had to wing it as far as the next generation of reactor covers (with a door).

So this time around I cut the drain pipe to 9 9/16 and slit it open (just like last time). However, I did not remove the outer white skin. I also cut horizontal slits about three inches long to create a door. To finish the door, from the inside I carefully cut only the black insides at the hinge point. So here is what I have thus far:

Next I took a piece of plexiglass the height of the door (ca 3 inches) and cut it to two inches wide. This was placed in the oven and heated to softening and molded around a four inch diameter mold (a coffee can).

Oops, My wife just pulled in and I was supposed to have dinner ready…….And it’s NOT! More later.

You didn't have to do all that just to make me one. I hope you made an extra for yourself.

Paul, I like scifi....grew up watching Star Trek with my brother, loved it! I am not however a crazed comic oddity. But really how could you not love the crappy acting in the original series. Kirk and his ability to say a sentence real fast then pause for one second and finish it in one word.lol. Let us not forget the background musak that would play as Kirk would battle the foe ( usually with knives or some other form of neo grekan roman wrestling style) to save ....whatever. He also had a tendency to shag anything even remotely female....god only knows what he picked up in his travels. Now you got me wanting to Netflix some old episodes, thanks Paul!

Liking the covering though. Drain pipe seems to do the job....well done!

Matt, I’m actually having yours sent out to be gold plated, engraved, and then encrusted with diamonds. However, if it’s not back in time, you might just get a 9 9/16 inch length of drain pipe or the black beauty I have in the sump right now….or maybe both. Don’t hold your breath.

Again, I think I watched every episode back in the day, and loved it. However, I recently saw an original episode and wondered why I was so fascinated with this show. The sceneries were obviously plywood (and hideous), the acting was terrible, and the plot was absurd. It’s amazing how times have changed. I actually had to turn it off.

Anyway, getting back to where I left off making a cover with a door…..

The small piece of plexiglass was heated and molded around a four inch coffee can. This was sanded and painted white.

If I can get to HD tomorrow, it will be finished tomorrow. Otherwise you’ll have to wait. Need some nylon bolts and nuts.

As usual nice job on the DIY.

Didn't you know, he was a technical advisor on a TV show back in the mid 80's? Although, I'm glad he finally cut the mullet. :adoration:

How do you know when it's time to add more pellets? Do you. Teak the zip tie every so often for a peak or can you see through the crack left if more pellets needed?

I’m also thinking that I don’t need to check them that frequently. So even if it’s zip tied, every three months or so I can check on it.

All systems are going to be a little different, but I originally bought a half gallon container(1882 mL) two years ago that I'm still using. So, except for the initial ramp up, you won't need to be in the reactor very often.

Back to finishing up the black out cover with door for the bio-pellet reactor:

That curved little piece of plexi was clamped into place on the door portion and drilled and tapped for two 8 – 32 bolts. This was then bolted to the door with flat head nylon bolts so that the flat head portion was flush to the inside on the pipe.

On the latch side of the door, a hole was drilled through both the plexi portion and pipe. The plexi portion was enlarged into a slot. A 10 – 32 flat head nylon bolt was glued into place.

For the time being I could only find a 10-32 nut at HD to hold the door closed. I’m still looking for a nylon wing nut to make opening and closing that much easier.

Installing the Bio-Pellet Cover

A piece of black electrical tape was placed on the reactor where the seam of the drain pipe will be. This will assure the seam area is also blocked from light entering the reactor.

The drain pipe was placed over the reactor and zip tied in two places….above the door and below the door.

Have you noticed anything yet? Lately the only things I have noticed is negative. Cyano is taking over the tank and some of my SPS look like crap. The only thing I can think of is the pellets. other than them I have done nothing different...

How long have you been running them? Iv been running them for a good 18 months. Only in the last 10 months have things been staring to look great. Take a while but I think my coral had to adjust etc.
