Need turtle help

My son and his friends were playing in the woods behind my house today and they brought me this.

I don't know if its alive or not. I can see the turtle in there through spaces in the shell. But not sure what to do with it. So I put it back where they found it. Should I just let it be?

Did you check up on it? It should have moved or popped it;s head out.
You can try putting it in a shallow pan of water. If its a live and the head is out check that the eye are open and clear.
if it is a live leave it be as its probably getting ready to hibernate.

Just looked and its gone. Good thing, cause the kids already named it boxy and are itching to look for it. I had to keep 4 boys out of the woods, not easy. Thx

In doing a bit of research I found out its a eastern box turtle and is perfectly at home right where he is.

That is correct. My son and I have nursed many back to health and released them in state parks.

Cool - i saw the pic and was like - ok I see the hinge but I don't see the head/legs...which means it's hiding. If it were dead it would not be able to hinge close like that I think...and it'd be might stinky....or plain empty.

thanks for sharing!
