New fuge setup

i added live to mine. just make sure you dont do too deep of a sandbed.id keep it under 2 1/2". the footprint in a fuge isnt big enough to handle denitrification. let the macro algeas handle that. if you are using cheato, i found it grows better and faster when it rolls like a tumble weed.

You can go dry, but would suggest getting a couple cups of good live sand from a member or two. 5.99 for rubble is bit pricy IMHO.

I thought the idea of a fuge was to do like 6 inches?

How many pounds do I need of sand?

I was planning on growing cheato, need to find a place to get it or if another member has it. I also need to pick-up a light from home depot.

Now I'm confused about the sand though I was going to do a 6" plus some LR rubble + cheato, but if 2.5 inches will be fine then I'm all for that.

Who sells dry sand? All I see are live 20 pound bags for like $30 and I won't even use that much in it.

im sure someone else will chime in if im wrong but a dsb needs to match the footprint of the volume of water passing over it. its like trying to fit a 10 apt unit into a tiny septic system. there isnt enough bacteria in it to break down the waste.

My suggestion for your fuge would be bare bottom...with a bunch of LR and cheato. A bare bottom will allow you to clean it easier when it gets all gunked up.

Always the case you need to balance your tank as best you can with biological, mechanical and chemical filtration. You I believe have enough room for a fairly deep sand bed.
Mine is about 4 inches ...but my DT has a very deep sandbed, actually deeper the the fuge.
Not to be repetive but I have mud, sand, rubble and cheato.

I believe 9supratt4 and I need to agree to disagree. ;D
As I recall your sump settup will allow you keep gunk from accumulating in your refugium.

JR...we can definitely agree to disagree. I don't have a refugium as one would be useless for me now that I am really into dosing vodka...the cheato wouldn't live. So I have a bare bottom in my sump and have that packed with my LR.

I do think though, that over time we all get lazy...so there will eventually be gunk build up in his refugium because of not cleaning the socks or pads often enough. I just personally like BB sumps and refugiums for that reason.

By Brandon, you could probably fit a nice sized sand bed in there if you wanted to....what is the depth of the fuge area...from where the water line will be to the bottom??

Depth if water level is 10 inche. Reconsidering I'm thinkig of packing it full of lr, 4 inches of sand and growing cheato

10 inches....don't forget...the cheato needs enough room to tumble and grow...So you can't take up too much room with sand and lr. Just do vodka dosing and then you don't have to worry about cheato LOL ;D

Got the sand in, I repeat sand is in !!!!

Going to pick-up a fixture from HD today and some cheato from a Stevx0r.

Refuge is well on its way. I figure I'll put egg crate to keep it in the center chamber.

My main issue now is I have my return throttled back significantly to lower noise, as in ball valve almost completely closed.

Steve recommended valving my drains and throttling those back, but the noise from the pump is from the anti-siphon holes pushing water out and splashing back down to the overflow area.

Use the pump to run a reactor that is what I did...then it goes back and recycles to the beginning of the fuge, so long as you have an area in the fuge with some calmer water the cheato can get a lot of flow.

Yeah....definitely get ball valves on those drains....you don't want to throttle the return pump back too much...you are losing a ton of flow in the process!!
